Looking at some stats on B-Ref, Olivera's Cuban League production is a bit similar to Cespedes but with significantly less power.

Cespedes' triple slash has had about 50 points lopped off his batting average, about 90 points off his OBP, and about 110 points off his SLG comparing Cuban to MLB stats. If we apply that same correction to Olivera, we get something along the lines of .270/.315/.395

According to the scouting reports, he has solid-average tools across the board. Good contact skills and plate discipline, gap power, plus defender and baserunner. Sort of a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none kind of player.

So he's...Matt Carpenter with fewer walks? Not 2013 Matt Carpenter, but I can see him reproducing Carpenter's 2014/15 lines without the high walk rates. I don't know if he has the Matt Carpenter batted ball profile of hitting everything straight (it's a unique hitting profile, I doubt it), so you can probably tone down the doubles and up the home runs.

Giants got Leake in a trade, not sure who for.

I love the picture, but we didn't give up any starters in the process. We have:

Bumgarner, Heston, Peavy, Leake, Cain, Hudson, Vogelsong, Lincecum

Lincecum is hurt, Vogelsong was temporarily moved to the bullpen (and is doing a damn fine job), Cain hasn't yet been himself and Hudson is on his last legs anyway... I'm not saying there isn't a spot for Leake because he's obviously a gem quality starter, but I'm saying we should have done something with these guys or else they will just be roster fill. There is still value in some of those arms, Lincecum included for a cheap enough price.

              Is the deadline over yet?

I hadn't heard about this until now. Just stumbled across the article on MILB.com from last month.

Former Braves minor league pitcher Joe Johnson was killed in a crash last month.

The Official Site of Minor League Baseball web site includes features, news, rosters, statistics, schedules, teams, live game radio broadcasts, and video clips.

                        That is terrible news.

Looks like his father went, too. I can't believe two planes actually hit.

The only problem with the article is they sometimes reference "Johnson" by last name only, and there were three Johnson's involved. Yes, the pilot of the fighter jet that hit their plane also has the last name Johnson (who ejected before the mid-air collision).

9 year old bat boy Kaiser Carlisle dies from inadvertent warm up swing

Kaiser Carlile, a nine-year-old batboy, died Sunday night after being inadvertently struck by a baseball player taking practice swings during a National Baseball Congress World Series game.

The Liberal Bee Jays, a summer collegiate baseball team, confirmed the news on Facebook:

With the permission of the family, and with much sorrow and a very broken heart, I regretfully inform everyone that Kaiser Carlile passed away earlier this evening. Please keep his family and our team in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you all for the support during this ordeal!

According to NBC News' Phil Helsel and Andrew Rudansky, the initial injury occurred during a game Saturday between the Bee Jays and San Diego Waves. Carlile, who was wearing a helmet, was returning a bat to the dugout, according to team president Nathan McCaffrey (via CNN).

Emergency medical services personnel, who were already on the scene to help a fan suffering from dizzy spells, quickly attended to Carlile and took him to Via Christi St. Francis hospital in Wichita, Kansas, in critical condition.

Gordon Bassham and Chris Arnold of KSN in Wichita, Kansas, interviewed Jim Parks, an eyewitness at the scene.

"[The on-deck batter] was swinging, and it hit [Carlile] in the helmet, knocked him down," Parks said. "He got back up, but he went right back down again."

Parks added Carlile was an avid Bee Jays follower

Shouldn't the helmet have prevented that? Wonder if the family will sue the helmet maker (I mean, I'd certainly talk to a lawyer about it) for damages. This is assuming that the bat hit flush on the helmet and didn't hit him in the face or next anywhere.
