44 years ago Nolan Ryan pitched a 13 inning no-decision striking out 19 and throwing an incredible 235 pitches.

I can't imagine something like that happening in this day and age.

In the past 25 years, no pitches has even pitched 11 innings in a game. 10 has happened several times in that span, but never 11.

One of those many things in baseball history we just won't see. One of the many reasons why I find people comparing players/eras in any sport to be pointless. In all sports, things today vs 10-20-30-40 years ago were much different.

MLB attendance is currently 6% lower than it was this time last year.

Besides ticket prices, is there anything else people think can be done to improve attendance?

For me, I think ticket prices for certain markets will impact things alot. For many markets, if you're winning, it won't matter how much tickets are, you can sell those seats. If you're not winning though, who is gonna want to pay those prices just for a fun time out at the ballpark? Especially if your team doesn't look like it has an immediate bright future and/or has struggled in recent seasons.

The 1-8 playoff format would boost interest since more teams would be in playoffs, but that's obviously a very unpopular thing as you'll see below .500 teams getting in.

You can pretty much easily thank the Giants alone for that.

I think part of it is so many teams are tanking on the season. There have been a few surprises, but for the most part we knew who was going to be really bad and it was a large number of teams.

Or the Marlins. Serious question for this site, will the Marlins finish the year with under 10000 fans on average in attendance? I think they're at 10300 average right now.

I thought they've kind of always been like that though. But without their star power there is really no reason to attend games there, I guess.

And yeah, they probably will. Opening Day against the Cubs brought upon a surge, and that put the average obviously the highest it will get it. Currently it stands as an outlier, I am sure.

Marlins attendance historically has been bad(similar to the Rays), but despite that, they've only had 2 seasons with attendance under 15,000. This will be the 3rd time ever, and likely breaking their 02 record where they averaged 10,038(They were so lucky the Expos in their downfall made Marlins not have the worst attendance in the league).

Given up hope that MLB will move the Rays. I'll never understand these leagues obsession with multiple teams in Florida when most don't draw fans. Is it really such a bad idea having 1 team representing the entire state? Let other markets have a team who'll actually get double the amount of fans attending the game.

                      2 tickets (1B dugout, 2 sections back) @ $250...parking @ $25, 2 waters @ $3.50/EA, popcorn and fries @ $6/each...total of ~$300

I think pricing is a big piece of it. I'd go more if it weren't so expensive for just TWO people.

                      Side point...

It's dumb they won't show replays at the game except on reviews. We're in 2018, MGRs challenge a call based on their video assistant in the clubhouse so what difference does showing replays to fans hurt? Also, I'd actually like to see a k-zone displayed at the park too to help the fans (and maybe even these idiot umps like CB and Joe West).

It’s pricing, I know tickets down here in ATL have gone up from last year and they aren’t seeing the numbers they were last year attendance wise and that’s with some really good young talent and a surprisingly good start, I’m from NY so they are still much cheaper in comparison though [emoji3]

I don't get why they don't lower the prices. Once you get fans into the ballpark, you can get them on parking, concessions, merchandise, souvenirs, and all sorts of memorabilia. When you have 81 home games a season, that really bodes well for them if they draw more fans. It's not like they lose out on costs of things if they get more fans in, except upfront money (if they don't get back what they cut, like go half off and don't get double the attendance or something).

That's what movie theaters have to do, and that's why their concessions cost so much. Thank goodness we aren't paying $30 for admission into those. The only way for them to lower prices on anything is for Hollywood to not spend so much more on their films.

Especially for families. Are you more likely to take your kid(s) to multiple games if it costs at least $25 per person for a ticket, or if it costs $15?

Once you get the kids in, you have to feed them and buy them stuff. An adult will know beforehand what stuff they're likely buying once they're at a game, but a kid can want anything. Pizza, hotdog, popcorn, slushies etc. Especially on hot days where you'll need to buy lots of drinks.

Sure, it's a different experience watching a game in person compared to on TV, but for many people, would you rather spend over $100 combined to watch a single game in person, or just watch the game on your TV for "free"(since it's included in your cable package you're paying for anyways). At some point, you have to weigh the cost of going to a game vs amount of fun you'll have at the game itself.

In some markets it doesn't help that scalpers ruin it for everyone too. In Toronto, there was a big story about how the teams profit from the resale of tickets through StubHub. So in a way, they're almost selling tickets FOR scalpers, knowing they'll make money on the tickets being sold again after that.

I'm sure weather has something to do with lower attendance too.

Rain doesn't motivate people to drive to the park.
