Happy Bobby Bonilla day. I still don't know how that deal was allowed.

Deals like this are done all the time. That's what deferred money is.

BB just had a good agent that they set up the payment plans like this.

Crazy yes but there's quite a few players still getting paid deferred money today.

Manny Ramirez. Derek Jeter. Bret Saberhagen. Jim Edmonds, to name a few.

Heck, the Orioles are also paying Bonilla.

I don't follow the minors but I don't understand why it matters that he is in AA.

And maybe you don't know this, but players are voted in by the fans, even at the minor league level the same way they are as in the major league.

I did not know AA players are voted in by fans.

Either way, his stats are not impressive relative to the other players in his league.

Speaking of Bobby Bonilla and deferred money. The Reds are still paying Ken Griffey Jr. and Carlos Beltran just received his final deferred payment from the Mets recently.

              Beltran received $3,142,857

Griffey is receiving $3,593,750 until 2024. Those payments started in 2009.

              A few others.

Mets are paying Johan Santana $5.5 million through 2020.

The Red Sox are paying Manny Ramirez $2,003,389 with 2.5% interest through 2026.

Sportsnet did an interesting analysis of Jose Bautista with the Mets. I knew he was doing better than he was in Atlanta but I didn't know just HOW good. It's nice to see him having a bit of a revival.

This is a really cool article about Twins recent call up Williams Astudillo.

In his 188 Triple-A plate appearances and 11 MLB plate appearances so far this season, Astudillo has walked five times (2.5 percent) and struck out nine times (4.5 percent). Aside from the fact that he finally made his major league debut, that type of performance is nothing new for him: He’s been doing this since he broke into pro ball with the Phillies organization in 2009. Over nine seasons, Astudillo has made 2,797 plate appearances and slowly, reluctantly accumulated 97 walks (3.5 percent) and 87 strikeouts (3.1 percent).

For the 2nd year in a row Colby Rasmus bails on his team mid season. Sounds like he's retiring for good this time around.

Seems he has a lot of problems or he's just not into the game as much as he thought he was?

I just hope this doesn't turn into a situation where 10-15 years from now we hear about Rasmus dying young or something crazy like that.

Excited he's finally getting a chance. I'm looking forward to seeing how he does, regardless if he sticks around or not I'm glad someone gave him a shot in the MLB.

Also, he made a slick no look pick off in spring training earlier this year!

Is Boras getting nervous that his cut on Harper's impending mega-deal might be shrinking a little bit? Sounds like it to me. My personal favorite Scott Boras Convoluted Speaking Out Of His *** Logic in here is that it's somehow a disadvantage for left-handed hitters (like Bryce Harper) that the league is 70% right-handed pitchers. Because of shifting and stuff. Good to know! Agent tears are always so salty.

Agent Scott Boras blames the increased prevalence of defensive shifts for his client's low batting average -- not the pressure of a contract year.

I'm not as naive as I once was about players signing huge FA contracts...it used to be easy to say "That guys just in it for the money! He doesn't even care about baseball/winning/[things fans care about]." But it's hard to fault a guy for cashing in his (likely only) opportunity to make big time money in a career where the median retirement age is below 40 (and while I don't have data to back it up I would assume it's dropping) and the owners/teams make even more money through their performance.

All that being said, Boras seems like a real jag weed who takes advantage of players to make himself a buck. I don't think he has any reason to poke his nose into these types of conversations

EDIT: By "these conversations" I mean things like shifting or pace of play or other 'state of the game' issues if you will
