    Re: MLB Off-Topic

    No surprise here

While nothing’s set in stone, one person familiar with the thinking of both parties, said it was “99.9 percent done” that the Jays would hire a new manager next season. Gibbons and GM Ross Atkins are said to have spoken multiple times about the plans, so sources say this would not come as a surprise to Gibbons.

People close to the situation suggest the plan is to hire a younger manager with a likely target date to compete in 2020 or 2021, and word is that Gibbons fully understands and believes he’s been treated very well by the new regime, which gave him an extension before the 2017 season. Gibbons is owed one more year, and will be paid, as is required.
I wonder who the next manager could be. I wouldn't mind Joe Girardi being one of the candidates. Though if they're looking for a "younger manager" than Gibbons, I'm guessing it probably means someone under 50, so Girardi wouldn't work, unless this "younger" stuff just means anyone younger than Gibbons, even if it's just by a year or two.

Or could just be Eric Wedge like people have speculated for awhile because of his Cleveland ties.

We'll probably hear the usual names as well like Sandy Alomar Jr, DeMarlo Hale and so on.

It's going to be a former player that fits the Aaron Boone, Cora, Dave Martinez mold.

Sorry guys, but Toronto is joining the 21st century.

I don't get what the "Sorry guys, but Toronto is joining the 21st century." part. Names I mentioned there would fit that mold wouldn't they? Girardi and Alomar are guys who played many years in the big leagues.

Alomar I think would be a nice fit. Obviously the connection because of his brother, his long ties with Cleveland, and being a big league coach for several years now.

I would not be surprised if their AA manager John Schneider gets the job or is in the final group before they make the decision. He's familiar with most, if not all of the young guys coming up and is a younger guy who fits in with the SABR type stuff. I would love it if he got the job but either way it's going to be a younger guy who can communicate well with the younger generation.

Girardi does not fit the mold at all.

Alomar might but I doubt a star like him will agree to answering to the GMs lineup requests.

The names I mentioned are the kind of guy teams are signing now. That's how things are done today. Toronto will follow the same format.

                  John Schneider?
                  Spoiler

Funny you'd mention that name. I googled him and most known John Schneider is the actor whose first role happened to be the (now late) Burt Reynolds movie Smokey and the Bandit.

As for the baseball one, reading up on him, he seems like he'd be a good fit too. Late 30s, was a catcher in the minors and has been a coach in Jays system for almost a decade. Won championships twice in A ball and this year in AA they're the 3rd best team in the league with the top offense. If Jays are serious about building from within their own roster, that familiarity with guys would help. I think he even coached Aaron Sanchez many years back too.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of #62.

I remember watching it with my dad and jumping up and down, even though I cared nothing for STL.

MLBPA digging into the Jays for not calling up Vlad Jr because of it being a "business decision" not a "baseball decision".

Jays aren't calling him up because it's a lost season for them and if they called him up they'd be wasting a year of eligibility for a guy playing 1 meaningless month of baseball. It's not like they're breaking rules. And this isn't first time any team has done this.
