It's a damm shame Trevor Bauer doesn't play in the AL anymore. Would be very interesting to see him pitch against Houston.

But at least the Yankees get a few series with them.

    But yea **** Bregman.

        MLBs new rules seem....ok.

They're not pitch clock, DH, expanded playoff level of grlundbreaking, but it'll be interesting to see some.

No more 40 man rosters, and having 3 batter minimums will be interesting too.

No more 1 batter specialists. All that probably only saves maybe 2 minutes per game.

The Athletic ran the numbers, basically it happens so infrequently and only in cases where the guy getting taken out needs to that the rule change will actually make games slightly longer because the guys being left in will just be getting beat up more often than not.

But haven't you heard? It's about pace of play. Not length of games.

These rules mandating how players are used are absolutely insane to me.

A pitcher has to stay in for a certain amount of time? You can only have so much of X on your roster?

How dumb. What business is it of anyone's.

20 seconds to challenge plays. Hope it’s actually enforced as replay really slows the pace of the game down.

how bout let the manager go on a tirade again? That was one of the best parts of "purist baseball"

                  why?

                  pace of the game?

And not having a pitching change 3 minutes after a previous pitching change will 100% better the pace of play. That's inarguable. So mission accomplished.

Love the relief pitcher rule. Adds more strategy and risk. And not a single person being honest is going to look back and say they miss the days of a pitcher coming in in the middle of an inning to face one hitter.

I like the strategy of going batter-by-batter and will miss it. I'd prefer they just drive in the new pitcher at 100 MPH in a bullpen cart and cut back on his 8 free pitches instead of this. This new rule just seems like changing something to change it. The total extinction of the LOOGY seems pretty drastic to make the games imperceptibly shorter. This particular change feels to me like the 'hold up 4 fingers for an intentional walk' rule. The positive effect will be negligible, but the DNA of the game will be worse for the cumulative effect of these hollow changes. And the future hollow changes they will engender.

What's more is people banging the drum for pace of play are missing out on an entire layer of the game--the 90% part that is half mental. Thinking along with what might happen, who might come in to face whom. A guy making an entire career out of being able to turn the screws on the best lefty batters in the game.

There will be a new strategy that arises within the context of this new system, and it might even be interesting, but just because a dinger isn't actively being hit at the moment doesn't mean the game is boring. Or that nothing worthwhile is going on. Most of us know this already, but a lot of people purposefully overlook this when taking up the mantle of pace of play!!!!

That leisurely/strategic pace is a part of the game's charm and I think we'd do well to keep that in mind.

As far as rule proposals that had been thought up in recent years though, I still am for restricting defensive shifts. I have been since we first started talking about our own proposed rule changes here over a decade ago.

This may sound weirdly opposite, but I personally think it looks babyish when a player gets a wrong call against them, and they go summon mommy or daddy to come resolve it for them. I loved when players fended for themselves. Now the only time they can do it is on balls and stri... wait, what? They're going to robot umpires next? Hot damn, you can't argue anything anymore.

Yes, I loved the arguments with umpires. It really riles up a clubhouse and fanbase on observe. It's sad that future generations don't get to see this, haha.

I wonder tho. Back in the 1940s/1950s, when games were 2:00-2:20 average length, how leisurely were they from AB to AB, pitch to pitch, compared to today? They can take it too far, and having 4-5 different pitchers in every game is definitely an exclusively modern charm.

There definitely was more purpose between pitches back then; you go back and watch those games and the hitter doesn’t leave the batters box while the pitcher gets the ball and pitches it. That certainly helped pace...but, the biggest thing I see is the difference in advertising.

Watch a game from the 1950’s and you’ll see one, 30 second ad read by the announcer...the time between half innings is very minimal.
