    Re: MLB Off-Topic

This is 2nd MLB season ever- 1958 the other- when every team in either league sits within 8 of a playoff spot at AS break
(by that it means, first time since 1958 that either the AL or NL has the entire league within 8 games of a playoff spot. That applies to the AL right now)

Should make for an interesting trade deadline, and final part of season too with teams being so close right now.

Sounds more like the makings of an uninteresting deadline

Dave Cameron has his Trade Value series up at FanGraphs: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/2015-...the-full-list/

I thought I'd link to it here since it's some of the best baseball writing out there. Hope you guys enjoy it as much as I did.

I find Dave Cameron absolutely awful. Those ZiPS projections are meaningless, his rankings are suspect and his omissions were notable (Kiermaier, Cain, JD Martinez, anyone sneaky good really). He's not a good writer at all, he brings down fangraphs imo.

Can't ever comment that though or I'll get swarmed with downvotes

I don't love or hate Dave Cameron like you guys, but it's a nice little piece to consume if not take uber seriously. All the FanGraphs writers are notorious for making ado about nothing, tossing in a gif and a heatmap and calling it good. I like the site a lot for the information, but the articles have gotten a bit too formulaic for me.

Aside from that, and I don't know why this is, but whenever I hear Dave Cameron I think Dave Campbell instead and want to call him 'soup.'

Yeah...we're just going to have to disagree about that. He's probably one of the main reasons FanGraphs gets as much traffic as it does.

Cain and JD Martinez weren't omitted either. They were listed in the honorable mention section. Martinez is a free agent soon as well, so he's not going to appear on a list of the 50 best trade values in baseball. And looking over his list again, there's plenty of "sneaky good" players listed. Pretty easy to nitpick over Player X being excluded when you can't list everyone. It's up to you to find a player to substitute out.

His methodology is extremely flawed. You can't project Carlos Correa to be a 5 win player in 5 years. When you project as many people as he has to be high quality in 5 years you're not comparing to the actual number of available wins. It's a misuse of projections.

Well, I don't think anyone takes it super seriously. If you were to look at the list and conclude that Carlos Correa is literally the 5th best trade asset in baseball, then you're doing it wrong. There's room for subjectivity and I don't agree with some of the rankings (Correa at 5th, for example, is pretty aggressive for a guy with 1 month of MLB experience under his belt).

I still think his list is generally a good proxy for overall value (meaning the amalgamation of current and future performance, cost, years of team control, off-the-field/personality issues, etc.) and a pretty cool baseball thought exercise. It's worth a read IMO.

                          Ummmm, I don't about that.

I don't see the current sellers as having "too much power" as a bad thing. The current sellers are the clear cut horrible teams and extracting maximum value at the deadline can put them on a faster path to recovery (unless your GM is Delusional Amaro Jr. in which case you are ****).

This will separate the true good GM's from the weak ones. Time for an honest, sober assessment of each team and those that can correctly evaluate their current roster will reap the rewards.

In small news...Canada beat USA at the PanAm Games in baseball for the gold medal! Features one of the craziest endings you'll ever see in a baseball game.

                            (watch starting from 1:15)

Sure, panam games aren't a big event like Olympics, and the best players from both countries aren't in it, but we still saw a number of current or former pro players in the game.

                            Canada with guys such as:
                            Andrew Albers
                            Phillippe Aumont
                            Jeff Francis
                            Scott Richmond
                            Shawn Hill
Kellin Deglan(1st round pick in 2010)

                            USA features:
                            Albert Almora(top 100 prospect)
                            Aaron Blair(top 100 prospect)
                            Brian Bogusevic
                            Casey Kotchman
Zach Eflin(1st round pick in 2012)
                            David Huff
