Still think it's a wait and see but people said it even then. The thing that made Bonds special was the fact that he was only going to get 1 good pitch not per at bat, sometimes not per game, but per series to hit, and he wasn't going to miss it. Bryce still has to prove that he can be put on ice for a game and then come out and blast the one mistake a guy makes.

Or it could be that Harper's 2015 was something of a fluke and not a new baseline of performance. The evidence Sullivan uses here is pretty revealing.

A replacement team would win something like 47.7 games over the course of a year. So a projection system would total a team's WAR and add 47.7.

Thanks for posting that...good stuff. I'll say that while the analysis is compelling, I think Harper is too young at this point to say what his baseline is. Heck, most guys are just getting their feet wet in the majors at this point and Harper's in his FIFTH full season.

The thing that I still see improving plate discipline (look at his K/BB ratios over this career) and the fact his BABIP is so low is killing him. I think, as was mentioned, there is a combination of luck and him expanding the zone swinging at pitches outside the zone because he doesn't get much to hit.

Bonds was much older before teams started pitching him like this, but all the same, I hope watching Harper struggle with it can help people appreciate how amazing Barry Bonds was as a baseball player. He's still the best I've ever seen (and I'd argue, the best that has played, steroids or no steroids).

            Re: MLB Off-Topic

I think Bryce Harper is young enough that he could bounce back from this but 2015 is going to be the apex of his career in terms of raw numbers. A part of me thinks there's still some of that immaturity that rubs people the wrong way and that unlike Bonds or other truly great players of history the whole walks thing is going to mess around with his head for the rest of his career. A lot of guys of Harper's generation tend to go with the "all or nothing" approach to hitting where everything is "hit it as hard as you can. Who cares what the situation is".

We'll see what happens but if his numbers shrivel up like this after the Cubs series and he can't bust out then how the hell is he going to take the pressure of being the highest paid player in baseball and playing in Yankee Pinstripes?!

              Great read.

Interesting his contact out of the zone is so high relative to last year, especially being he walks so much.

it really was amusing. It was an all time great year but one season and the Harper/Trout stuff was back on.

I post on another board and 1 month into this season everyone concurred that Harper had passed Trout...Trout had seen his apex and we were only beginning to see what Harper can do. Funny how quickly the narrative can shift.

With the releases of both A-Rod and Papelbon, MLB active rosters became 1000% less douchey today.

And who asks for a release from a playoff-bound team? I guess Papelbon couldn't handle being Drew Storen'd this year.
