is it just possible that Torre had some influence over that decision by Steinbrenner? i believe that to be the case, but its pure speculation obviously....as for Steinbrenner having more money than every other owner, not true...he just does the "right thing" by reinvesting that money into the on-field product, whereas many owners just want to pocket any profits they can find, all the while screaming poverty.....i am NOT a Yankee fan, but i certainly wouldnt mind having Steinbrenner as an owner either...2 more cents for the pile

      Re: Torre Gets Extension

well to be fair to Torre the teams that he managed prior to the Yankees were bad, (Mets) promising but didn't reach their potential (Braves) and in transition. (Cards)

I actually thought that Steinbrenner would let Torre go after this year but it's good to see that he was smart enough to keep the best manager in recent Yankees history in the fold. I wonder tho if they would've let Torre go if Mazzili was still with the Yanks as I heard he was a possible replacement as well as Willie Randolph tho it seems his name is always thrown around and he's never hired for anything.

It's the fact that the Yankees just keep spending more and more money. It reminds me of a point that was made during the Yankee mock trial on ESPN the other night. When you play Monopoly, everyone starts with a equal amount of money. The Yankees payroll being WAY higher than say, the Expos or the Pirates does give them an big advantage. Yes, the Angels, Diamondbacks, and Marlins have beat the Yankees recently with smaller payrolls. But, before that, it was rare. With the Yankees signing ARod, Kevin Brown, Javier Vazquez, and reigning Torre, they will be a very tough team to beat this year. Steinbrenner has WAY more money than everyone else, so he buys what ever he wants, included their good manager. Not trying to start another Boston-Anti Yankee Fan vs. Yankee Fan War. Just throwing out my $0.02.

If you want to bitch and moan about them signing Sheffield, or getting Arod, fine. But if your suggesting they shouldn't resign their own players or managers when they have the money to do so, than well, that's rediculous.

Again, any owner in the league would resign a manager who has had the success Torre has. It's one thing to complain about them signing big name free agents. It's just stupid to complain about them giving an extension to a manager.

I can't think of any other manager in baseball that I'd rather have coaching my team other than Joe Torre.
Say what you want about the Yankees, I'm a huge fan of Torre and most of the players on that team. I truly believe the animosity so many people generate at first thought of the Yankees is due to Steinbrenner. Are the Yankees bad for baseball? No. Is George Steinbrenner bad for baseball? IMO yes.
Same can be said for the Red Sox organization as well, they aren't up there in payroll like the Yanks, but they aren't exactly shy with their money either.

Well the Yankees were already pretty good when Torre got there (wild card in '95), so they had started making better decisions. Most of the credit usually goes to Steinbrenner's front office "baseball people", like Gene Michael. It seems that Steinbrenner has no problem acquiring guys that Torre dislikes, Ruben Sierra a couple years ago as an example. I don't think he was too happy about bringing back Jeff Nelson last year, either.

I don't mean to take anything away from Torre, as I said before I think he's a good manager. He did a pretty good job his 3 years in Atlanta. His stint in St Louis was disappointing though, and his years with the Mets were brutally bad.

I don't think managers have that much of an effect on their teams. It doesn't matter who the manager is, if you have bad players, you're going to lose. If you have good players your odds are a lot better, and Torre's had the best.
