I do actually think this stuff is over and he's pretty much going to disappear this year. And I think he'll keep himself in shape and attempt to come back and contribute next year, and the Yankees will give him every opportunity to do so. They aren't paying him $61 million to go away.
As I said once in another thread, I think baseball is too important for Alex to give it up, even if that means giving up a shot at an enshrined legacy. He wants and needs baseball in his life (on some level where he's important as well, but he still needs it).

That said, the Yankees shouldn't wait/pray on him. If they find a replacement third baseman who can fill his void, they'll empty their pockets for him. Beltre, Zimmerman, Machado, Donaldson, Sandoval... there is a pool out there that can contribute on both sides of the ball for a less shiny penny, without the cloud or shadow of a doubt.

He'll have a lot to prove next year, but we'll see what the Yankees go with this year and if it will work out for them. Or better yet, let's see what happens with Youkilis this year too.

Zimmerman wont even be a third baseman after this season.

I can't imagine a "clean" 39-year-old A-Rod, fresh off 18 months without a competitive AB, has much to offer on the field in 2015. He's 6 HR away from a $6M bonus. So New York is going to pay him 67 million dollars to be injured half the time, be a statue at 3B, provide league-average offence at best, all the while being the mother of all distractions and media ****storms, even by Yankee standards? The Yankees are going to give A-Rod the chance to pass Babe Ruth while wearing pinstripes and pay him another $6M for doing so?

It really amazes me that people ever thought this guy would challenge Aaron/Bonds record. I remember as recently as 2009 people were still talking about this…I've been saying since 2006'ish he had no chance (I said he needed to average 30/year all through his 30's to do it and didn't see it happening in a post-steroid world). He has no chance now.
