Speaking of locks and first ballots. How about the class of 2006...McGwire, Ripken, and Gwynn. Three firts ballot guys in one class, when was the last time that happened?

1999- Nolan Ryan, George Brett, and Robin Yount

Yeah whatever. That wasn't supposed to be that easy. I thought all those guys retired around the same time, but not in the same year. Those are two pretty good classes if you ask me.

Andruw Jones has got to be considered a near-lock. He's got around 250 HR's and he's only 27. Even if he never realizes his full offensive potential, he's still going to end up with HOF numbers.

My locks/near-locks: Randy Johnson, Roberto Alomar, Chipper Jones, Andruw Jones, Greg Maddux, Sammy Sosa, Ken Griffey Jr., Barry Larkin, Todd Helton, Roger Clemens, Jeff Bagwell, Craig Biggio, Tom Glavine, Mike Piazza, Jim Thome, Trever Hoffman, Barry Bonds, Vladimir Guerrero, Rafael Palmeiro, Pedro Martinez, Nomar Garciaparra, Manny Ramirez, Frank Thomas, Ivan Rodriguez, Mariano Rivera, Jason Giambi, Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Gary Sheffield, Edgar Martinez.

Possible: John Smoltz, Larry Walker, Bobby Abreu, Jim Edmonds, Scott Rolen, Brian Giles, Miguel Tejada, Javy Lopez, Curt Schilling, Magglio Ordonez, Juan Gonzalez, Kevin Brown, Mike Mussina, John Olerud, Carlos Delgado.

Since everybody else is chiming in on this list, I'll offer my thoughts. Of these, I think only Maddux, Clemens, Piazza, Bonds, and Rivera are absolute locks. That means if these guys stopped playing today, they would get in. After them, I'd say Randy Johnson, Sosa, Glavine, Palmeiro, Pudge, A-Rod, and Jeter are looking good/borderline.

Barry Larkin will not get in. None of the closers listed would get in before Mariano. Your "possibles" list is pretty bad...I think only Smoltz and possibly Rolen stand a shot, and thats assuming Smoltz tacks on another 200 saves and Rolen continues to play at a high level for another 7 years.

I cannot believe that you even considered listing Javy Lopez.

Mariano will get in because of what he's done in the post-season, which is as godd as argument as any. He is the best post-season closer ever. He's 7-1, with 30 saves and a 0.75 ERA, just amazing. I think you have to give Hoffman some real strong consideration though. Had he not missed pretty much all of last season he would be 3rd on the all-time list for saves by now, with a more that good chance to run down Lee Smith. Their regular season numbers are pretty equal, but Mariano gets a ton more pub because the Yankees are always playing in October. They're both damn good, and I think they both should make it in.

How 'bout the first HOF class. Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson, and Walter Johnson.

Cy Young didn't get enough votes that year.

True, a very good class, but some of those guys were dead by the time the Hall opened up.

I must correct myself, Gehrig wasn't in that original HOF class of 1936. It was Cobb, Ruth, Wagner, Mathewson and Johnson. Gehrig was one of the first 26 inductees, though, when the Hall opened in 1939.
