You guys have some weird definitions of locks.

Locks - Roger Clemens, Greg Maddux, Randy Johnson, Barry Bonds, Rafael Palmerio (ugh), Edgar Martinez, Pedro Martinez, Sammy Sosa

Tweeners - Trevor Hoffman, Jeff Bagwell, Frank Thomas, Omar Vizquel, Curt Schilling, Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, Jim Thome, Manny Rameriz, Mike Piazza, Chipper Jones, Ivan Rodriguez, Mariano Rivera, Mike Mussina, Ken Griffey Jr.

Not yet, but should be locks if their careers continue - Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Albert Pujols, Carlos Beltran, Andruw Jones, Magglio Ordonez, Mark Prior, Kerry Wood, Vladimir Guerrero, Eric Gagne

It'll be tuff for Smoltz to get in because people are going to compare his numbers with Eckersley, and he needs a lot of saves to catch up with Eck and I'm not convinced his arm will last that long.

I'm a big Smoltz fan, but I don't think he'll make it. He's a free agent at the end of the season. If he goes to another team he'll probably want to start. He'd pick up a few more wins but probably not enough to make the hall, and he wouldn't yet have enough saves to make it.

If he stays with the Braves, he would in all likelihood remain the closer. The Braves are going through a transitional period right now, slashing payroll and playing more youngsters. This is expected to continue, rumor has it ownership wants the payroll under $70 million by next year (it's currently about $80 million). A lower payroll and as a result more young inexperienced players, probably means fewer wins and fewer save ops. for Smoltz.

So whether he goes elsewhere to start, or stays in Atlanta to close, he probably comes up short. And I haven't even mentioned the injury factor. He just turned 37 last weekend and has said that if he needs another elbow surgery in the future, he'll probably just retire.
