Are some batters looking to get beaned?

According to this article from SI, there are times when batters who wear body armor look to get hit by the baseball -- and some would even go as far as purposely sticking part of their leg or arm out over the plate to take one on the gear when it appears like they're trying to avoid the inside pitch.

Interesting read. I hadn't really ever looked at it from this perspective until it was brought up here. This does make sense to me too.

I see guys do this every now and then when Tim Wakefield is on the mound. They'll make absolutely no effort to get out of the way of one of his knucklers.

I don’t think they are looking to get hit, but if a ball is about to bean them they're not going to move. They're looking to get on base, and if that means taking one for the team they do it. There are even some who aren't wimps who don't need the protection of armor and go up ready to take one anyway.

Fernando Vina does it all the time. Sticks his elbow or his knee into the pitch, used to annoy the heck outta me when he played for the Cards.

But someone said it earlier..all they are doing is taking one for the team, and making it harder to pitch to them if you don't want to put them on base. It's a good strategy if they can handle it, but it's def. not for every batter. </font>
