Re: Tony Gwynn passes away at age 54

I seem to remember Greg Maddux saying one time that he hated Gwynn because Gwynn was the only hitter he couldn't outsmart.

This was the best I could find though.

No hitter can tell the difference in speed of different pitches, except that &^%$#@! * Tony Gwynn.

#Padres Tony Gwynn faced Greg Maddux 107 times in his career, more than any other pitcher; Gwynn batted .415, Maddux never struck him out.

RIP to one of the best hitters ever. 54 is so young. **** cancer.

Tony Gwynn was seriously one of the all-time "good guys" in the business. Rest in peace.

Amen to that. Being from San Diego as well and having seen Gwynn play for much of his career, this truly is a sad day for baseball as well as for the City of San Diego. I know that his baseball numbers speak for themselves, but Gwynn was one of those great guys, both on and off the field. Indeed he will be missed.

Re: Tony Gwynn passes away at age 54

One of my favorite Tony Gwynn moments was in 1997 when he and Larry Walker were both making runs at batting .400. The Padres were playing the Rockies and Gwynn got a hit and when he got to first, he wrote his batting average in the dirt next to Walker, which got a laugh from both guys. So next time Walker came up and got a hit, he marked out Gwynn's batting average and wrote his down.

RIP Mr. Padre. And yes, **** cancer.

Wow this seems so sudden but apparently he was on medical leave recovering from cancer treatments. Like the man himself, he kept this ordeal quiet and handled it in a classy way. I didn't see too much of Gwynn's career but what I did see was great. I even have a copy of a ballgame where he actually hit a HR! If he had played in the eastern time zone he'd get a lot more recognition for being the best hitter of his generation and in my books the 2nd best pure hitter after Ted Williams.

R.I.P. to a great baseball player and an even better human being.

he's had cancer for years and is well documented his struggle against it.

this is So sad. I'm never really emotional over celebrity or sports deaths, but this one really hurts me. my dad played baseball with him at sdsu and I have a picture as a 2 year old on his shoulders in the dorm rooms.

This is a sad day in the baseball world. I've actually had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Gwynn while I was on a recruiting trip a few years ago at SDSU. Really nice guy and a class act on and off the field. He will be missed dearly.

No, I get that…I lived in San Diego from 2007-2012 and was there when he was diagnosed. It's just that we haven't heard anything about him getting worse. I am pretty sure I saw him on a Padres broadcast just a few weeks ago and he seemed fine. It was just stunning to see this happen like this.

To the family and San Diego State's credit, they did a really good job of keeping his final struggle private. I work for the conference SDSU plays in and I don't think anyone here really knew how bad of shape he was in.

I unfortunately did not get the pleasure of working with him as baseball is not one of my assigned sports, but everyone here that has worked with Tony said he was pure class all the way.

I'm glad I was able to watch a majority of his playing career. One of my all-time favorites.

                      He will be greatly missed.

Wow. To think I played for him even for a couple of months... this is just the saddest news! I haven't seen him in a few years now. I can't believe this. Yes DJ, pure class all the way indeed.

This is significantly bigger than SDSU or MLB, but they just lost a great man in their ranks. I pray for Gwynn's family. R.I.P. Tony.

Read something crazy today. Tony only struck out 3 times in a game ONCE in his career. The pitcher? Bob Welch, who passed away last week.

Gwynn was such an amazing player, and amazing person as well. Always friendly, etc.

He ended up having 500+ doubles and less than 500 strikeouts. I mean, just wow, he went 6 straight seasons striking out less than 20 times in over 450+ plate appearances.
I mean, you can just go on and on about his accomplishments. They are all mind boggling, 19 straight .300+ seasons?

I still remember back in 1998, i lived in Colorado and my dad was lucky enough to win the car they gave away at the All Star Game. One of the rewards was the Rockies organization let us on the field for batting practice for one game. We chose the Padres, and it was amazing watching Gwynn take batting practice.

A couple more ridiculous statistics in honor of one of the greatest hitters in MLB history.

Tony could have gone 0 for 1,000 and still have a .300 career average.

He also had 33 career 10+ game hit streaks, and struck out multiple times in a game 34 times.

Truly an artist at the plate, and he'll be missed dearly in the baseball community. RIP
