He wasn't always fat though, just most of the clips you see of him he is heavy, even when he was heavy he was still a good athlete.

I know. Makes you wonder what he would have been like if he was in the same shape as some of the guys today.

Yep, I wonder what a lot of those guys would have been like if they trained seriously.

dude if he played NOW, it wouldn't even be fair, he'd have trainers nagging at him, better bats, way smaller stadiums....the list goes on, I can't even believe some of the numbers he'd put up, I'm talking 90-100 homers, except he'd get walked twice as much as bonds is now, so.....more like 50+....but he'd have a .700+obp.....man, who really noes?

I doubt he would put up 90 homeruns. You could look at it the other way, better pitchers who throw more pitches, specialization of pitchers rarely get to see the same pitcher 3 times in a game any more. No minorities back then, the overall quality of play was less.

He was great but it doesn't make sense that all the great players only played in the early 1900's and not now. You have to look at the context in which each of these players played.

Real boring book by Bill James called Win Shares, but he is trying to come up with a way to compare players from various eras. Way too technical but he brings up a lot of good points about comparing eras.

              kerplunk,

You can't tell what Ruth would do now.
Are you sure his body and mind could handle the work and training required to do that? Not every one can.

well obviously i never saw Ruth play, but from what i've heard and read it's not really much of a decision. Ruth is the freakin' Sultan of Swat man!

Gotta go with the Bambino just because he was the one that made hitting homers "the thing". I mean chicks dig the long ball right, so we have the Babe to thank for that.

And I for one don't think Barry is juiced the guy has one of the sweetest swings in baseball and that's something that no streroid can give a player.
