    WTF??

We trade away Jeff Keppinger, one of our best hitting prospects and we get Ty Wigginton, whom we didn't really want, a pitcher, something we have plenty of, and Jose Bautista, which is good, but we never should have lost him in the first place.

I'm not a fan of this trade.

Not a huge fan of this trade either but I think Littlefield did an ok job. I mean did we really think that we were going to get David Wright, Dallas McPherson, or a stud prospect for a sub .500 pitcher with a 4.00+ ERA? Jury is still out but it's not the worst trade Littlefield could have made. I might have waited till tommarrow to see if Johnson was traded to the Dodgers and see if a team would over pay for Benson.

The one thing that really kinda ticks me off is tradign for Jose Batista. It's sorta a shot at the Pirates after that Rule 5 debacle that we have to trade to get our own players back. Plus giving up Kippinger kinda hurts. He could have turned out to be decent but with our overflow of middle infielders he might have never seen the light of day.

But I'm just glad I'm not a Met fan they really went all in for a shot at a playoff run. They have 6 games to make up and just sold the in an attempt to catch up. It's going to be tough.

Yeah, I don't think the Mets played this very smart at all....

I think Keppinger would have played if he continued to hit, though this gives Castillo a chance to keep getting better. With his glove, I'd be happy with him hitting .260 in the 8 hole.

Something else I'm not a big fan of: since we traded for Bautista, he has to stagnate on the Pirates' bench. They can't send him down to the minors without exposing him to waivers.

Are you positive of that? Because Atlanta got Alec Zumalt back and then optioned him down.

As a Mets fan I do agree with you that the Mets didn't play this well at all.

They overpaid a bit for Benson, who I feel is an overrated pitcher. I think they could've given up three or so prospects with a chance to make the Pirates team(not Peterson and Huber) and made the deal.

They should've stopped at Benson, but no.... they had to get Zambrano.

THe Mets aren't going to win the NL East. These were deals that could be made if the Mets were in first and wanted to extend the gap a bit in a weak division or deals that could be made if the Mets were 1-3 games out and needed a boost. This team isn't a contender. They should be sellers, or just stay put and see what happens the rest of the way. Maybe the rest of the NL East falls back to the Mets and the Mets can play hard and take over the division. Who knows?

In the offseason, Benson can be had in free agency if he's not traded, and the Mets could package Wiggy and some prospects for a GOOD pitcher, not Victor Zambrano. They have the rotation they need for the 2005 season and keep some of their top pitching prospects for beyond. All the Mets needed to do was wait 2-3 seasons, but no, they couldn't wait, and this team's going to fail. These deals make the Mets out to be as bad as the Knicks and the Rangers are. Their farm system's now pretty lousy but not Yankees-level lousy, and they don't have the resources the Yankees have. These are going to be a long next few years for the Mets.

Pirates and Devil Rays were the big winners yesterday

If you get the player back via the Rule-5 (the other team send him down) then yes, you're free to send him down. However, before he goes back to the original team, the player must clear waivers. Since the Pirates got Bautista back in a trade, he would still have to clear waivers before the Pirates could send him down (or essentially give him back to themselves)

I've always liked Kris Benson and wish nothing but the best for him with the Mets but, I would not want to be him when the Mets get back to New York. Kris got roughed up 7 runs in 5 innings. If this keeps up New York is going to be real harsh to Kris. I hope he does better next time around.

now that they have Wiggs , the Pirates should release / demote Chris Stynes(a valueless player), When Ward comes off the DL Randall Simon should then be released.

This makes the pirates a little crowded on the right side C.Wilson , Mackowiak and Ward between right and first ,

and 2nd base will be very crowded when Freddy Sanchez finally gets activated. At that point Nunez should probably be released.

Wiggington should hit well for the Pirates. The pirates almost have a decent player at every position , they just lack the star players.
Too bad they don't have another 40 million invested in them, or they could be a legit playoff team.
