    MLBs most overrated/underrated player?

OK, many would say Sosa is overrated but by whom? I think most are honest about Sosa. My vote goes to Jeter with Edmonds getting honorable mention.

Ill have to think about the most underrated. I havent seen a lot of the small market teams this year.

I still dont think Albert Pujols gets nearly enough credit as he deserves.

        Re: MLBs most overrated/underrated player?

I may catch some major flak for saying this but here goes...

I'm a Cub fan but the most underrated player is Albert Pujols...he's possibly the best batter that I've ever "watched"....Now I didn't say best batter ever. But I go to enough Cardinals games a year and I see him blast my Cubbies on WGN quite often. He seems to ALWAYS put the ball in play and put pressure on the defense.

On the contrary, the most overrated player BY FAR is Sammy Sosa...I'm so sick and tired of all the hype about him. He strikes out SO FREAKING MUCH. I calculated his percentage of strikouts per at bats and he strikes out more than 1/4 of the time...its something like 27% of his at bats are strike outs. That is totally rediculous and unacceptable, unless in fact, you are Sammy Sosa. I guarantee Albert Pujols could hit 66 home runs or probably even break Bonds' record if he went up to the plate every time like Sosa does. Of course he'd strike out about 180 times per year too.

Strikeouts are the most useless at bats that can be...and Sosa's done it over 2000 times in his career. I've seen SO many situations where Sosa has a runner on third, he strikes out and then Alou comes to the plate and flies or grounds out. If ony Sosa put the ball in play, somewhere, some how...that runner from third would come in to score...but he strikes out and with 2 outs there's not much that you can do (although the Cubs have seemed to score most of their runs with 2 outs this year).

And while I'm going on my rant, think about this. If the Cubbies brought up a rookie from Iowa and gave him 15 starts, which in those starts he batted .250 with 2 home runs but had 20 strike outs, I'd be willing to bet the next time he'd be playing baseball would be in Jackson Tennessee with the Diamond Jaxx. But all in all, I guess I still have to love Sammy, after all I do like seeing him hit the long ball every so often but man I'd love to have Pujols in pen stripes instead.

Bah, Pujols isn't even the best hitter in the NL. Bonds is still the best. He has 29 homers. 5 people have more but they all 100+ more at bats than Bonds. Pujols has 150 more and only 2 more home runs. Bonds also has the second highest batting average all of baseball, Ichiro leads. His OBP, Slugging%, and OPS are all lightyears ahead of everyone. And this all comes from seeing one or two pitches a game that are hittable. Pujols is extremely underrated but Bonds still takes the cake as the best hitter in baseball.

Definitely agree with you on Corky being the most overrated though.

Sosa is declining, everyone knows that,he K's like it's gone out of style and he plays horrible defense...he can't be overrated when no one is rating him high anymore...

With that said the most underrated player IMO is Mike Lowelll

                    Re: MLBs most overrated/underrated player?

I agree with the players mentioned. It's hard for me to call Pujols overrated because I've always viewed him as one of the best players in MLB. However, he definately doesn't get the notoriety that many of the "stars" get.

Jeter and Sosa are very overrated IMO (from a stat perspective). Like others have said, Sosa K's way too much and plays below average defense. The only thing going for him defensively is a very strong arm.

Jeter has always been overrated IMO. Statistically he's not one of the top players in the game and probably would be just another SS if he didn't play for NYY. However, he is the heart of that team and his leadership ability can't be denied.

Pujols is not overrated he was MVP runner up the past couple of years and he's always mentioned as one of the best hitters of all time. BUt i dont know why pitchers pitch to him, maybe because of that powerful Cardinals lineup but he's just now lost in the mix because of Rolen and that Cardinals lineup.

Sosa cant be overrated because he is in the 500 club...he deserves all the credit he gets...yes his defense is shaky at times but you cant deny that Sosa is one of the dominate players in baseball. If your going to judge on Offense AND Defense there are not many guys that you can mention.

but i think the Yankee Team is overrated i can bet you they dont win the World Series

I think Johnny Damon is underrated. The guy has great range in center field, and overall he just plays great defense. It seems like he makes highlight reel catches on a daily basis. He gets on base, steals a couple bases, and has good power for a leadoff man. It just seems like he goes out there and gets the job done. All that being said, he has been getting a little more attention lately because of his "Jesus" look.
