Actually they were talking about this on MLB Now on the network yesterday. They were saying how a pitcher could conceivably just throw a pitch if a guy is taking an inordinate amount of time and the umpire would almost definitely have to call it a strike since the hitter isn't in the box.

You might actually see pitchers trying to exploit that early in the season. Even in that instance there may be some controversy as some HP umpires will be more lenient than others. I could see some major growing pains with that rule.

Happy about the rule to keep managers in the dugout. The trot out to the umpires last year was such an overdone farce.

So what prevents the manager going out to the mound to "talk" to the pitcher, looking back, and then issuing the challenge from the dugout? What prevents the batter from making as much time to go to the batter's box as possible and calling time before the manager makes the decision?

The easy solution is to put a fifth umpire in the booth and just get the call right. But that would make sense...

The umpire can refuse to call timeout for the batter for one.

I guess no more manager arguments. That kinda sucks, from a humor/**** umpires standpoint.

The batter can still milk it going to the plate. I'm sure if there was a fine for it, there would be some under the table dealings to make sure the player wasn't screwed out.

Human rain delay, David Ortiz not happy about the horror of keeping one foot in the box.

If he plans on ignoring them, he would have been fined $900k last year at most (though foul balls and swings & misses are included in this calculation). He'd almost be more than willing to take a hit like that to do his thing.

Which is only 10% of his yearly salary. He doesn't care.

Boo hoo. Ortiz is one of the most worthless players in the game. You want to know his true character? Go look at what he did in regards to Yu Darvish's near no-hitter last year.

What are you talking about? Seriously, I don't get all the Ortiz hate here at all…I'm a Braves fan, but Ortiz has been one of the most enjoyable players to watch over the last 15 years.

My assumption is he's just unjustifiably still bitter about this:

Five days ago, Texas Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish came within an out of throwing a no-hitter. On Wednesday, Major League Baseball ruled that he actually didn't. The league announced a reversal of a scoring decision on a controversial seventh-inning play involving David…

I remember that…I watched that game. It isn't ANYTHING that other players don't do throughout the year. How that makes Ortiz worthless or awful is beyond me.

Funny thing is that Ortiz was actually the one initially wronged there. Had it not been a no hitter at the time that would have been ruled a hit 10 out of 10 times.
