    Ichiro for MVP?

Will Ichiro get MVP this season if he breaks the hits record?

    No.

The MVP award usually goes to a player on a winning team. Although A-Rod did win it last year.

I predict Ichiro will get votes but he won't win it.

            No No No.

It's my belief if a good player is on a losing team he has no value on the field other than to draw fans. Remove Ichiro from the Seatle Mariners' lineup and they are still a last place team. It's that reasoning alone why I think Arod should not have won it last year.

                Re: Ichiro for MVP?

The reason Alex Rodriguez won the award last year is because his numbers were clearly better than anyone else (in terms of power numbers).

Did Ortiz or Posada deserve it more? Probably, but all of those guys canceled each other out because ARod was so much better.

This year, no one is clearly better than the next player. Teixeira, Ortiz, Ramirez, Rodriguez, Sheffield, and Guerrero all have similar power numbers (which voters love), so you won't see a guy like Tejada or Ichiro win the award.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Although what he has been doing since the Break is remarkable, I highly doubt Ichiro receives the MVP award for his efforts. . Because of his team's terrible play, his feats are going almost unnoticed to the casual baseball fans. Sure, us diehard, live for baseball people know exactly what he's doing, but Seattle's struggles almost cancel his actions out.

I don't agree with that at all. If sports writers want to give an award to someone for having the best numbers then make up a new award or change the award's name from MVP to something else. How can any value be placed on a player who plays for a last place team? There is no value there. While his presence may not have caused any harm to the team (though in hindsight such an argument could possible be made) his presence did not benefit the team in a way that affected the team.s overall success. And giving him the award perhaps because he hit more home runs in a hitter's park makes no sense.

As for this year, it's a two man race at this point between Ramirez and Sheffield and right now Manny has the edge. His OPS, Slugging, RBI and home run totals are all superior to Sheffield's. Still, writers love the drama of a player playing hurt so that helps out Sheff. The winner may be determined by who's team wins the East.

Arod isn't in it because his numbers aren't as good as Manny's and Sheffield's. For a guy who has hit 3rd and 4th in the lineup all year he should have more than 80 RBI at this point. Vlad and Texeira's teams have played them out of the race. Texas most certainly will not make the playoffs at this point and the Angels are a longshot. Ortiz is an interesting candidate and if he can close the gap between home runs with Manny he could factor into this race. Right now his slugging and OPS aren't as good as Manny's but he has more RBI and only 2 fewer homeruns. If Ortiz gets a lot of attention it could be to Sheffield's advantage as the two Red Sox players may hurt each other's chances.
