    Re: Scrap the MVP award!!

The whole idea behind the MVP winner having to play for a playoff team is ridiculous.

Judging a player based upon the team's record is not judging his "value"; it is merely judging how well players around him perform. In my opinion, a lone star on a team is just as valuable as a player on a team that's packed with talent.

If someone like Ichiro left his team today, his team would be in much more trouble then if Vladamir Guererro left the Angels or Sheffield left the Yankees. Those playoff teams would have other superstars to fall back on, while a losing team would just become that much worse.

As said earlier, superstars on bad teams are just as valuable to their teams as superstars on playoff teams, just in a different way.

Honestly, I think the entire "most valuable" thing is stupid, and the award should just be based on best overall player. Players get cheated way too much just because they're surrounded by no talent.

If Ichiro leaves the Mariners they're still a last place team. They can't theoretically get any worse if Ichiro were to stop playing right now. Take Sheffield away from the Yankees and are they in first place? Probably not. Take Manny away from the Red Sox and are they leading the wild card race right now? Probably not. The MVP award is given to the player who is that final piece of the puzzle who turns a pretender into a contender.
