Honestly, I think he was. He couldn't relate to today's modern player. He is just too old school for this era. Baseball has changed since he was a player. I really don't think the team ever really got up to play for him. They are obviously a lot more loose and energetic under Pete Mackanin.

I think they will come back to Earth at some point, but this streak is proving that these young players we now have can play good baseball. It has been so fun to watch.

One more against the Braves tomorrow and then the Dodgers are in town Monday-Thursday. Looks like Aaron Nola vs. Clayton Kershaw Thursday and I have tickets for that game.

That will be a fun game to watch and any chance to watch Kershaw live is an opportunity worth seeking.

It sucks about Sandberg as I've mad respect for the guy. I guess, like Allan Trammell they just have too much of a high bar for players and are too old school to bend a bit for the realities of the time.

I have a ton of respect for Sandberg as well, but his personality was so stifling it seemed. You get the feeling that players were always on edge and had to be serious. Mackanin just lets these kids play and have fun. I could really see him keeping the managerial job next season (if he wants it) depending on how the Phils do the rest of the season. I really don't think this rebuild is going to take as long as some think. We have a lot of talent in the upper levels of the minors. Especially AA. That team is stacked. Moreso now with the players we got back for Hamels.

Hank Conger with 2 HR and 5 RBI tonight following Jason Castro hitting a 3-run bomb in each of the Astros previous 2 games. That's 4 HR and 11 RBI in the last 3 games for Houston catchers.

Correa also hit 2 out tonight and he has 3 in 2 days. The Astros have scored 16 runs in the last 3 games with 15 coming via the long ball.

Twins score two runs of the M's via passed balls and they won on a walk off by Kurt Suzuki. If Zunino blocks those pitches, it's a 2-1 W for the M's.

I think Sandberg insisting that Jake Diekman MUST learn to get righty batters out instead of using him as a lefty specialist, which is what he showed his strength as being was symbolic of Sandberg's stiffness.

                  And now they're both gone.

With all due respect to Ryno who I idolized growing up and is easily my favorite player of all time, he was too old school for his own era. He was painfully shy, always serious, and didn't learn to lighten up until much later on...and he's still not exactly the most "loose"/"laid back" guy around. Sometimes what makes a person great can also hold them back. Ryno was legendary for his work ethic, repetitions, and his professional approach to the game (let's just say that Ty Cobb would've even thought Sandberg was a little too intense at times). I could see that approach wearing very thin on today's ball players.

I'm saying that to be a good leader, in addition to work ethic and professionalism, you need to know when to turn it up and when to turn it off. Guys like Joe Maddon are hailed partly because they can let their hair down and let the players see them as a colleague rather than an overseer. Nobody is saying guys like Maddon are unprofessional just because they're not on you like white on rice all the time. The best managers (and not just baseball managers) provide what it takes for their team/players; a lot of great players become poor managers precisely because they just can't understand why it isn't so easy for everyone else as it was for them. This is also the same reason why in many sports, coaches have a short shelf life; the players need a "new voice."

EDIT: But, I am probably preaching to the choir here talking to you about management techniques. You're the OSFM guy! You're steeped in project management experience.

Also heard tonight that, since his June 8 debut, Carlos Correa leads the Majors in extra base hits. Wow.

Jays-Royals series finale today! Hoping for a good result, but wouldn't be too surprised with a loss. Some Royals hitters done great against Dickey in their careers, but Jays hitters have sucked against Volquez in their careers

Would be great to get a win and win the series! Then heading into the HUGE games against teams like Twins(tomorrows game sold out!) and later on Yankees!
