BREAKING: Dave Dombrowski released from contract

The Detroit Tigers have relieved General Dave Dombrowski of his duties, according to Major League Baseball.

The MLB reported the move at 4:10 P.M. Tuesday and said assistant GM Al Avila has been promoted to Executive VP of Baseball Operations and GM.

At a press conference Tuesday, Al Avila said he was offered the job by owner Mike Ilitch Saturday. He also said that Ilitch will continue to allow the team to pursue free agents.

Avila said Manager Brad Ausmus is the manager for the rest of the year and he "has all the confidence in the world in him."

"This is Mr. Ilitch's decision, I will report to him," Avila said. "I will report to him. He will continue trying to make this team a winner."

He also talked about the unique situation of being the father of catcher Alex Avila's father and quipped that it will not be like little league where the manager's son "bats fourth."

The Tigers confirmed the move with owner Mike Ilitch releasing this statement:

"I would like to thank Dave Dombrowski for his 14 years of service," said Ilitch. "Together we've enjoyed some success, but we're still in aggressive pursuit of our ultimate goal: to bring a World Series title to Detroit and Michigan. I've decided to release Dave from his contract in order to afford him the time to pursue other career opportunities. I feel this is the right time for the Tigers to move forward under new leadership."

The move to release Dombrowski comes just a few days after the Tigers traded away David Price, Yoenis Cespedes, and Joakim Soria for prospects to the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Mets, and Pittsburgh Pirates, respectively.

Avila also released a statement after the announcement:

"I'm very excited for this opportunity, and honored and grateful to Mr. Ilitch for having the faith and trust in me to run the ballclub in our continuing pursuit of a World Series championship," said Avila. "After 24 years in professional baseball and 14 with the Detroit Tigers, I believe I'm uniquely qualified to be successful in this role in leading this organization. We're confident we can make a strong push to win this year, and that we have the foundation in place to win next year and for years to come."

The Tigers have called a press conference at 5:00 P.M.

Dombrowski was named General Manger in April 2002.

In his time as GM, Dombrowski turned around the struggling franchise. He traded for Miguel Cabrera and David Price, among others. The Tigers have won the last four American League Central Championships but find themselves in third place behind the Kansas City Royals and Minnesota Twins.

In 2003, the Tigers were the worst team in the league. Three years later, with Dombrowski making the moves, they were in the World Series. They lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in five games. In 2012, they returned to the World Series but were swept in four by the San Francisco Giants.

Hope he has sense to fire Cherrington after he verbally put the noose around his neck saying that the roster construction was done poorly.

The timing makes me think that Dombrowski told Ilitch he was going to leave in the offseason. The Tigers are getting a head start on the restructuring of their front office. DD was CEO, President and GM; I imagine the Tigers will divvy up those roles to multiple people.

Still, it is sad to see him go. He turned us from the laughing stock of baseball into a contender from 2006-2014. Only in 2008 were we under .500 in that time span. Hopefully Al Avila took notes on how to make a trade.

The whole thing is reported as a mutual departure, and really sounds that way too.

Tigers let him go, so he has more time to actually find a new place to go. And he leaves now, so Tigers also get head start when offseason begins since they can plan this stuff before offseason even starts.

Obviously the Price thing is my main hope for him going to Jays. He got Price in Detroit, shipped him off to Toronto,so it'd be cool if he then goes to Toronto, and further convinces Price and/or Jays owners to agree to a certain deal that keeps Price in Toronto long term.

We'll see. He'd be likely getting that offer to come to TO too.

Don't count out the GM job in Seattle as well.

Something tells me Dombrowski will want something a little less heavy on his plate in terms of overall responsibilities. The man was literally the entire front office/upper management for the last 13 years in Detroit. I bet he'd be happy with a simple GM or Presidency role.

I believe you are right SPTO. He was baseball in Detroit in terms of management. Next should be Ausmus to go I'd imagine.

Great run in Detroit, but bear in mind he had one of the largest payrolls in baseball to play with year-in and year-out, so it's not like he was finding undervalued gems and over-achieving. We achieved about on-par with our payroll.

Sounds like it wasn't mutual now as more of the story trickles out...I wonder if/when we'll finally find out what really happened?

We most likely won't know for many years. Avila almost sounded arrogant and giddy in his press conference when talking about taking the helm. I wonder if there wasn't some kind of disagreement going on between Avila and Dombrowski that led to this decision?

Whatever momentum might have built toward a move to Boston for Dave Dombrowski appears to be evaporating. Indications are that the ousted Detroit executive is more likely to take over a front office in Seattle or Toronto that he can run with autonomy rather than slide into a structure with John Henry above him and Ben Cherington still in place below.

Biasedly I would see Toronto more likely than Seattle. Past 30 years he's basically been on east side of the MLB. Montreal, Florida, Detroit. Don't see him changing that to go halfway across the country to Seattle. Guessing his family lives in Detroit, so Toronto would make even more sense then cause it's just a 4hr or so drive.

On the flip side I don't want Dombrowski to have TOO much autonomy especially with how well AA's done for us right now. On the OTHER flip side Dombrowski seems like the guy who could break apart the rather antiquated team policy of 5 year contracts being their max.

Dave Dombrowski could be moving closer to becoming the Toronto Blue Jays' next team president.

According to The Toronto Sun's Bob Elliott, representatives from the team's ownership - Rogers Communications- has contacted the former Detroit Tigers general manager about filling the role, which Paul Beeston will vacate after the 2015 season.

Elliott reported that the Los Angeles Angels and Boston Red Sox could also be interested in hiring Dombrowki.

Normally I wouldn't take much of what Elliott says seriously but seeing that Dombrowski is an older guy I can see Elliott having some kind of in with the people involved in his camp.

It'd be nice to see if the Jays can get this wrapped up as quickly as possible.
