Re: 8/17 - 8/30 Game Discussion Thread
Blzer I think it might have been at a Bills game. I had to a project for one of my classes in college about a sports stadium and one of the things we had to talk about was some things that we would change. And this is one of the things we looked into. And IIRC it was during a Bills game that had happened.Comment

Re: 8/17 - 8/30 Game Discussion Thread
You can't legislate away bad things from happening. You said it yourself that a net wouldn't have done anything about this guy. What, should we have 3 feet high glass dividers in front of every seating level? I'm sick of proposals presented to "DO SOMETHING!" about something just to make people feel good that they "DID SOMETHING!" even though it does absolutely nothing and is ugly and pointless and costly but worst of all an appeasement to the Peddlers of "Problematic!" who think everything is wrong with everything. How about we stop demanding empty "fixes" (for problems that don't really exist) and start demand accountability, awareness, and intelligence from people?
As for the netting, that's more for the very real hazard of flying objects (bats, balls, shards) coming at fans at a high rate of speed. Even fans who are not dumb or whatnot can be victimized by this. You turn to the side to talk to your friend or to swill a beer for a moment and you might be on a stretcher before you know it. I don't see how any reasonable fan can be against extending the safety netting all the way around the infield. I mean, we are already used to it behind the plate, where the most expensive field level seats are.
Like I said, there's not much you can do about people falling 85 feet unless you install circus netting under the upper levels and I doubt people would agree that's worth it. If people want to jump, they're going to find a tall building somewhere and like you said, you can't legislate accidents from happening or drunk people from losing their balance. Even if you stop alcohol sales at ballparks (which wouldn't happen), people will sneak flasks in.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment

Baseball is the most accessible sport there is. It's a horrifically unwise decision to mess with that especially in the name of magic pixie dust solutions to problems that don't exist.
If someone's that scared of a ball or a bat hitting them, then they need to stay home and watch in the comfort of their own homes. Period. That's literally one of the last things I consider when attending a baseball game and I'm willing to bet that that's the case for most. But you have the agenda-setters (like sports writers) whining about it and making it such a big deal that we hear about it every single time something like this happens that it fools people into thinking this is a freakin' pandemic.Comment

That stadium has had some weird crap go on in its history like when a crazy fan tried to attack Howard Cosell during a MNF broadcast.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

You can't legislate any of it. What if a homer is hit and someone in the bleachers isn't paying attention and the ball hits them? Or a foul ball that goes beyond the netting?

Not everyone that goes to a ball game is the type to lurk on OS 16 hours a day and spout factoids about every game every day. Many fans are children, women, or people who are casual fans at best. Not to mention people are always on their phones these days at games. If it takes a few feet more netting to keep people safer and keep us from hearing about 'fan X gored by a bat shard at a ball game' blurbs, then why not? Like I said, it's not radically different from the netting we already have behind home plate. And you can't honestly hold people to some idyllic, libertarian standard like they can actually take care of themselves. Most people are stupid and it's a wonder this doesn't happen even more often than it already does.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment
