but your wrong there... A-Rod won MVP with the rangers and they were in last. Ichiro can do the same thing.

but there were no stand out players on the winning teams (from what i recall). this year, boston has ortiz and manny, yanks have sheffield, etc. ichiro will get votes, but probably won't win.

That's just amazing.

I was watching a segment on a sports show and they did a report on Ichiro. Ichiro is the most unorthodox hitter to do somethng like this. Ichiro breaks Ted William's #1 rule on hitting in that he lunges forward to make contact on the ball thus shifting his weight before the ball comes to him. So it's even more extraordinary that he could do this with such an unorthodox swing.

That's what I find so amazing. He has the weirdest swing, yet the man cannot miss a baseball. How he can swing while transferring all his weight forward and bailing out at the same time is mind boggling.

The most interesting stat I've heard:

Around 1/4 of Ichiro's hits have been infield hits that he has beaten out for a single.

He leads the league in ground outs and only 14% of his hits are for extra bases. What else has he done? Let me see, he's bunted twice in the past few weeks with a runner on second, two outs and his team down by 2. That sounds pretty selfish to me. I know the Mariners are out of it, but he still needs to try and do anything he can to help his team win. If he were any kind of hitter he would just lace a single to outfield and drive in the run, but let's face it, the guy can barely get the ball out of the infield. 250 hits is wild, but I hope he doesn't get the moniker of best pure in the last "X" years, because he just doesn't deserve it.

I know how Ichiro can hit the ball so well!

The secret is that he plays TONS of video games.
Playing video games improve hand-eye coordination tremendously.
Like most Japanese guys, he probably plays a ton of games, maybe even the dancing ones!
When batting, everything slows down as his hand-eye coordination is much better than others and he can hit the ball.

Rather than joining his Mariner pals for drinks and whatever during off-time, he goes home and plays video games to keep up and improve his reflexes. He probably is the master at Ninja Gaiden which requires super reflexes.

I can name 4 players in the past 20 years that I believe are better pure hitters. I'm talking about guys that can actually drive the ball into the gaps and hit for a damn good average. Any guy with damn near 250 hits shoud have at least 50 doubles and he doesn't even rank in the top 50 in doubles in the AL. I'm not saying the guy isn't good, I'm just saying there is more to the numbers.
