Re: Ichiro WILL Make it
I would have a hard time voting Ichiro MVP even over Mora and Tejada. Ichiro hasn't even scored a 100 runs yet, isn't even on the radar in doubles, and his stolen base numbers are nothing to write home about. It's not like any of his stats (or even his overall play this year) really make you jump out of your seat (other than the number of hits) and think "MVP".
Sheffield, Ortiz, Manny, and Vlad all have better cases for the MVP award.
On a side note......
It's interesting that most of America is taking an interest in seeing Ichiro break Sisler's record, but did you know that when Tuffy Rhodes played in the Japanese League he tied Sadaharu Oh for most home runs in a season (55) with a few games left to play and they didn't even pitch to him the rest of the season. They literally rolled the ball up to the plate on a few occasions. That is how reverred Oh and his HR record are in Japan. So much so that they didn't want a foreigner breaking the Japanese Babe Ruth's HR record.
Now could you imagine the uproar if Rangers walked Ichiro every plate appearance over the next three games?
It's quite an achievement to break a record as long-standing as this, but it isn't the glamour record like HR, RBI, or K's (for a pitcher). In fact, I think that if Gagne or Rivera were to break the Save record this year it would get more attention than breaking the hits record.Comment

Ichiro is going to break the record unless he goes on some horrible slump the last few games. HOWEVER, Sisler did it in 154 games. Ichiro didn't.
It doesn't take anything away from the record, but is it the type of thing where you'd consider putting an asterick beside his soon to be record?
So I think it should be an asterisked record. But it's still quite the accomplishment. 200 hits is incredible .. 250+ is unheard of in our times.Comment

Originally posted by cyyounghalladayThere should be two sets of records .. one for the old schedule of 154 games and one for the current schedule. It's not Suzuki's fault that there's 8 extra games now, but he has had those 8 extra games in which to pass Sisler, so in a sense, he won't really have broken Sisler's record at all. But he will have the 162-game record. If that makes any sense.

I can't debate the difference in the game and players during Sisler's time and now because there is a huge difference (some favors today's game, some favors the game of the past). However, a record is a record and the record holder still has to go out and do it no matter who he plays against.Comment
