    Applause to the Padres

Congrats to the Padres doing a 180 after last year's horrible season. From 64 wins to 87+ (depending on the last two games). It's been a great year pitching-wise but a terrible year for the offense, yet the managed to stick around playoff talks towards the end of September.

Players that deserve props on this team for carrying the team for the season:
Mark Loretta (Team MVP without a doubt).
Jake Peavy (Missed six weeks worth of baseball, pitched like he hasn't missed a beat this season).
David Wells (Has pitches well enough for 20 wins, but was a victim of poor run support).
Scott Linebrink, Akinori Otsuka, and Trevor Hoffman (nice comeback).
Ramon Hernandez (If he didn't get injured, he'd be up there in HR and RBI on the team).
Phil Nevin (Padre fans can whine about him all they want, but where would the team be without his 25 home runs and 100 rbi production this season?)
Special Mention: Khalil Greene (Good job solidifying the SS position, his offense should improve, but right now he did a great job offensively and a good job defensively despite his errors.

This season better give KT and Moores a clue that they better build off this success.

I agree with Nevin. He really helped the squad with his homeruns. What was kind of strange Klesko didn't really help the team much. Greene is going to be an all star soon. His defensive skills to me make him rookie of the year. Loreta also helped a lot but I think the pitching really did all the work. Peavy was fantastic all season long. Lawerence wasn't bad either. Wells was pretty good and of course Hoffman.

As for next season I say see what you can get as for hitters. Bourghous didn't have that good of year, and I don't think he's that good of a player. Hes a solid hitter, but thats it.

        Re: Applause to the Padres

Well, Sean Burroughs played his way out of the Padres future plans because of his poor production at his position. Burroughs defenders say he went in the offseason with a different mentality, but I don't think there should be anything different about how you approach the plate whether you bat first or eighth. The guy has never hit above .300, he doesn't walk nor does he hit for power... He'll have competition with Xavier Nady now that the Padres are letting Nady get familiar with his old position at third (he's going into the Instructional League to work on that).

Ryan Klesko shouldn't even have played the first three months of year given the fact that he wasn't cleared to lift weights until after the All-Star Break... Most of his production came after the break. I hope Khalil doesn't run into a sophomore slump and if Giles and Nevin get back on track next year (given that Nevin doesn't get traded... which I doubt will happen), Loretta should have another solid year at the plate.

As for the pitching, Eaton's 2005 year might be (hopefully) his last year with the Padres. This guy is consistent at being inconsistent, he'll pitch five perfect innings, then give up the game in one inning. He's a head-case. All he thinks about is blowing fastball past guys. He hasn't learned how to pitch.

This was a good season for the Padres, they will finish with winning record, guy's like Khalil Greene and Jake Peavy give the team something to build around, and with a few moves in the offseason could be primed to make another run at the N.L. West. I say good job to the Padres and lets hope next year is even better.

                Re: Applause to the Padres

I couldn't be happier with the Padres season this year. We didn't trade away our entire future for Steve Finley and still showed that we can compete until the last series of the year.

While I think Finley would've helped this season, I think we would've gotten considerably older and set ourselves up for failure over the next few years.

The last person the Padres should trade is Nevin. If there is anything I can't stand it is a team full of robots. Nevin is a leader on the field and in the clubhouse and the guy plays hard every single game.

I'm sorry Klesko was recovering from his injury for half the year, but he needs to go while we can still get a can of sliced beets for him.

I think the team would be better off without Burroughs, but I can't lay the blame for his lack of performance solely at his feet. He is not a lead-off hitter and should not have been forced into that position. He admits that he frequently tried to simply put the ball in play even if it meant weakly tapping the ball to the left side of the field. Burroughs is either a two or five hitter and would probably hit .300 with 35+ doubles if he were given the opportunity. That being said, I think we'd be better off trading him and trying to bring in someone like Mike Lowell.

Ideally I'd like to see us get Carlos Beltran and a #3 caliber pitcher (I think Peavy is ready to be a #1) and possibly Lowell while dumping Klesko, Payton, and Burroughs.

On the positive side, ownership is showing that they are willing to open up their wallets for next season as indicated by David Wells starting tomorrow. That means a $250,000 roster incentive will kick in. That is a nice gesture by ownership setting up Wells' resigning for next year.

                Great season Friars.

                    Re: Looking Towards the Offseason

Now that the season is over (and I've got every right to rag on the Padres because they failed to meet my expectations of 88 wins), a bunch of stuff needs to be done.

Get a 3B that can actually hit like one... tell Sean to do that and/or have him compete with Nady or a marqee free-agent (if that ever happens).
Find a real CF that can get on and hit better than .260.
Trade Klesko or Nevin, preferably Klesko since Nevin can reach LF with ease.
If possible, move Giles back to LF and get a RF'er or play Nady there in RF.
Get a solid starter for the fifth slot...
Get some real bullpen pitchers, not some AAA scrubs like Ricky Stone and Steve Watkins.

Fellow Padres fans, don't be surprised if KT says this and that about the offseason about top F/A's but not do anything about it. I've been reading that the payroll won't increase... if this is true, guess what John Moores... that's the most money you'll ever pocket after this year when attendence in Petco goes down. The team is not one or two players away from being a playoff team, there's a lot of things to do and I have a feeling Towers will disappoint. My guess is that KT will get some players like Dave Hansuck to "improve our bench" or "improve the offense" and get guys like Ricky Stone and say they will "improve the bullpen" or "plug in the fifth slot." I'm hoping KT will make me eat my words, but I'm getting fed up with his lies... especially after he said Guerrero was out of our budget when:
                        1) Brian Giles is only making 2.5 million less for the moment.
                        2) He trades for bench players like Terrance Long and Jeff Cirillo.
                        3) When Hoffman took a cut in pay just play in 04.
                        4) When the money from Hoffman and Nevin's injury were supposed to come back to the team.

Now people say that when we traded for Giles it took us out of the Guerrero sweepstakes... who's to blame? KT of course, he pushed the panic button and look, he gives up a possible-ROTY and a potential-multi-Cy Young award pitcher for a guy who hasn't had a good season since 2002 and is 4 years older than Guerrero. Not to take anything away from Giles, but if he was not from San Diego he wouldn't even be here.

Anyways, I'll save the rest of my rant (if there is any) for Spring Training.

I'm not sure about why we released Witasick, he made a decent long relief innings eater guy, but KT finally got it right by releasing Ricky Stone, Steve Watkins, and Kerry Robinson.
