    Yankees-Twins ALDS Thread

I think the key for the Yankees this series, and probably through the whole postseason if they get further is Mike Mussina. In previous years, he pitched good, but not great, which was ok with Clemens, Pettitte and Wells on the staff. Now, he really needs to step it up and be the guy you can count on to win in a big spot. If he does, the Yankees should be ok. If not, I don't think there's anyone else on the staff you can really count on, and the Yankees could be in trouble.

Right now, the only 2 definites for the Yankees rotation are Mussina in Game 1, Leiber in game 2. Doesn't look like El Duque will be able to go, so I guess it will be up to Vazquez and Brown in games 3 and 4. Yankees offense is really going to have to do it in those games. Vazquez has pitched good enough to keep the team from being out of the game in the 2nd inning lately, and no better than that. Brown looked good against Toronto, but didn't get out of the first inning against Boston, so who knows with him.

Santana will be tough to beat. Yankees are going to need to take pitches, and get to the bullpen, and hopefully steal a game against him. After that, none of the Twins pitchers scare me. I say it will be the same as last year.

Yankees lose game 1, come back to sweep the next 3 and win the series 3-1, but I'm not all that confident with that prediction, and I wouldn't be shocked to see it go the other way.

Either way, should be a fun series!

I also wish the Yanks would lose but i'm realistic. The Twins will win game one but the Yanks will sweep the next 3 games.

Don't under estimate Brad Radke. I'd take him over Jon Lieber and game 2 may be the pitcher's duel game 1 isn't, because I expect Mussina to give up some runs but Santana to give up no more than 1 at the most. Game 1 is a must win for the Twins because they don't have the offense to fall back on that the Yankees do. And they have a good bullpen with Nathan, Rincon, and Romero. The Yankees can't afford to lose any games not started by Santana. If Both Santana and Radke beat them they're done because the trio of Brown, Hernandez, and Vazquez isn't going to get it done. And we'll finally see if Torre really was over working Gordon and Rivera because they will be used heavily in the playoffs because New York doesn't have the type of starting pitching to go more than 6 or 7 innings. They only had one complete game all year and it was an 8 inning complete game loss by Mussina.

Honestly though, I could see this series going either way. I think if the Yankees weren't the Yankees though they would be the under dog with that staff. Since they are the Yankees and they have home field they're going to be the favorite. Should be a good series.

It's going to come down to Santana and I don't think the Yanks can beat him, espically with what the Yankees have for pitching. I think it's going to come down to a game 5 and Santana will come up in a big way in Yankee stadium.

The Twins just don't play the Yankees very well... I don't know why, but they always look like they're trying not to lose or something. In a weird kind of way it almost feels like Game 1 is a 'must-win' for the Twins, which is preposterous, but it really feels that way. And that's not good.

Well, until the Twins show me something different, I gotta go with Jets' prediction of the Yanks in 4.
