    My thoughts (credit to Barstool):

This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen. The Red Sox are having a ceremony for David Ortiz’s last meaningless game? His last time playing a game that he’s openly admitted is stupid and doesn’t even enjoy playing in? This is one of those annoying marketing things that you have to deal with from the Fenway Group, and one I’ve said a million times that I’ll happily deal with as long as they spend money and try to win, but it always comes off as so forced. It’s like they’re announcing to the rest of baseball that this is a really huge deal, David Ortiz leaving the game, and should be treated as such.
It's a way to get fans to a meaningless game at the end of spring training. Not really surprising nor is it all that egregious.

I have no issues with it myself.

I would hope players would announce their retirement a couple of days before their last home game and then rode off.
Also Rivera's got bad as well, they all do in my book. Like I saw in the article on barstool sports about it, Feitelberg hit the nail on the head. This stuff is way to overdone with the gifts and stuff. Like just have the commentators/analysts point out this is player x's last game in stadium y. And I also hate A-Rod a little more for the way he did it. Like at wait until after this season is over before saying you are going to retire after 2017.

I'm just glad the A-Rod nightmare has an end date. Time to past the page on that. Yet the dude is 27 HR's behind Ruth and 68 behind Aaron. This can't end soon enough.

Yeah, the farewell tours are getting pretty stupid. It's going to be mildly interesting in some respects for Ortiz and A-Rod though as they aren't universally loved as the other guys were. I could see some crowds sitting on their hands or outright booing.

Maybe the player wants a farewell tour by announcing early, but it's really on the teams for doing something for the player. The player can't throw their own farewell tour.

All of these season long farewell tours are stupid IMO. Especially when the arch-rival team showers them with gifts... I don't get that. Back in the day, the would have showered them with profanity and broken glass, not an Escalade. Even if it was one of the guys from one of my favorite teams I'd say the same thing.

This is what I'm saying. The Twins gave Jeter a gift. His teams knocked the Twins out of the playoffs several times. While smugly fist pumping on the top step of the dugout the whole way. **** him with a hot poker heated by the heat of a million suns. Don't give him a gift!

These "farewell tours" go back to at least Cal Ripken Jr. and very likely you can go back further than that.

I don't mind it. If the player is great enough and they decide they want the hoopla, eh. It could be a little more toned down but eh, that's what brings in the business.

Weird, you'd think dudes were stopping the game and giving them gifts in the middle of the 6th inning or something. I can't imagine why people would dislike guys getting gifts before the game, but to each his own I guess. I'll tell you what, the Yankees can give Ortiz whatever they want but he's not getting any standing O in Yankee Stadium, a part of me would die inside.

I bet he does get a standing ovation there. I'd actually wager on it if it weren't against the TOS.

The Mets gave Chipper something so all things are possible.

The Chipper Jones farewell tour makes its final stop in New York this weekend, and we're happy to report the Mets did go out of their way to honor Jones with a special pregame press conference and presentation of his … Continue reading →
