The guy is a great player. He may have an ego (can you blame him?), but he comes to play - and almost always well. He's not Derek Jeter. He's Alex friggin' Rodriguez. You can have the intangibles, I'll take the 40 homers, 100+ RBI's and the great 'D'.

    Just my opinion.
    Agreed as well.

The blaming A-Rod for Game 4 was their opinion.... which I partially agree with... because if you knock 40 HR's and 100+ RBI's... you should be able to hit a fly ball or a ground ball just to get the run in.. but alas he is human.

Just to spark a new debate... if you could have one player for the next 10 years... who do you pick... Jeter or A-Rod?

I'll take Jeter every time just for the intangibles he brings to this team.

Re: A-Rod blasted on Mike & Mad Dog... and my final thoughts of the 2004 Yankees.

I'm a die hard Yanks fan, and I'm also a bit dissapointed in the team, but mostly I'm pissed at how the Boss has been operating since '01. They lose one World Series and he just goes nuts, completely depletes the farm system, and goes out after every available All-Star instead of finding different pieces to the puzzle and putting together a team that meshes well. Instead of getting Tino Martinez-type, they went after Giambi who couldn't hit a fastball his first two years in pinstripes and now after this mysterious season, his career may be over.

No Scott Brosius or Paul O'Neill. Gone is Mariano Duncan and Chad Curtis. And The Boss has just completely forgotten about the most important aspect of baseball, starting pitching. How do you let Pettitte and Wells get away? Two of the better lefties in the majors, and GREAT post season pitchers. Clemens there was obviously nothing that we could have done about.

I loved the aquistion of Sheffield instead of Vlady, that was a smart move that I liked even before Sheff's great year. But then he goes and make's A-Rod his top off season aquisition and just ignores Pettitte. Word is he just assumed Pettitte would resign so he was at the bottom of the Important Stuff To Do list, and he got away. So then he goes out and signs 38-year-old crackhead Kevin Brown who was just a mess all year. Vazquez will be fine in the future, this year was a transition year from NL to AL.

I'll be extremely pissed off if Steinbrenner focuses mainly on signing Beltran this off season. I hope he stays in Houston, or goes elsewhere. I don't want him in The Bronx.

As for their play on the field, the ALCS was the epitome of this team. When they were on fire, they absolutely destroyed the oppostion. And when they went cold, they got 2-hit by the Devil Rays. The bullpen was shaky, and we stranded runners in scoring position. It was not a pretty sight.

As for 2005, I have an eerie feeling that Joe Torre will step down this winter. Just tired of The Boss, the collapse will be difficult to overcome. This isn't even a "team" anymore, it's just a collection of great individual talent. We don't have any friggen contact hitters anymore besides Jeter, though Cairo was a great aquistion. That's the move the Yanks always made in the 90's. He's the type of player they need. And then tonight on Sports Center I see the Top 10 Potential New Yankees, and it was disgusting. I don't want Nomar playing 2B, or Soriano playing RF. I don't want 41 year old Randy Johnson as our ace.

My father was telling me all year that this year would mark the downfall of the Yankees. Even when they were up 0-3, he said they still didn't have a great chance of winning the ALCS.

As for A-Rod, his antics will be hard to erase from the minds of Yankee fans. It was a classless move. A very un-Yankee move. He was having a great post-season through Game 3 of the ALCS and it seemed that he was going to be launched into Yankee lore immediately for his post season success, but apparently it wasn't meant to be.

It's getting more and more difficult to like this team. Don Mattingly was my hero when I was growing up. Paul O'Neill is my favorite player of all time. I worshiped David Wells. These just aren't "The Yankees" anymore. Sure we'll make the playoffs for the next 5 or maybe even 10 years because we'll be a good enough regular season team to get there. But there isn't the mystique right now. We're slowly turning into the Atlanta Braves of the '90s. I don't even view the ALCS as a great comeback for Boston, because we just rolled over dead and handed it to them. Derek Lowe throwing a 1-hitter in Game 7 at Yankee Stadium? 4-32 or whatever with runners in scoring position? Back to back blown saves for Rivera? A-Rod showing his frustration visually by bitch-slapping Bronson Arroyo? C'mon now.

Everything the Yanks have stood for from '95-'01 is officially gone, and it's rather depressing. I think I'll go watch my tape of Game 1 of the 1998 World Series, go Tino.....

                Great thread.

I don't have to add much, most of my thoughts have been mentioned already.

yup - just heard their comments & also the interview w/ Schilling.. very poginant words.. have to agree w/ everyone and say that the A-Rod play was stupid & his reaction of "what did i do wrong" was also as stupid.. the Yankees this year had great players but weren't a great team...

I said it in another thread but this team is becoming eerily similar to the 82-95 Yanks. Ehh mentioned it that the farm system is non existent with all the trades and transactions when acquiring the big names. Again, Jeter, Pettite, Mo, Posada, and Bernie all came up through the system. Now you cant even really name a good player that has come up since the WS loss in 01. Every top prospect was moved. The lack of starting pitching killed the Yanks in the lean years and that is what is about to happen again. Like I said it was fun while it lasted but the dominance will be on hold for about 15 years as the farm system is built back up.

                                Great posts, all of you.

But why does it take a disasterous collapse for everyone to all of a sudden reflect upon how they "didn't like this year's team?"
