    Re: Jose Fernandez R.I.P

    Initial findings by investigators.

MIAMI — A boat carrying Jose Fernandez was traveling at a significant speed when it struck rocks as it approached a channel near the port of Miami, resulting in the death of the Miami Marlins pitcher and two close friends early Sunday morning, officials in Florida said.

Fernandez was killed as a result of the impact of the crash, and did not drown, Lorenzo Veloz, an official with the Florida Wildlife Commission, confirmed to USA TODAY Sports.

Fernandez, 24, was not driving the boat when it struck a jetty near Government Cut, a channel that provides boats direct ocean access from Miami Beach. Veloz said the three victims were between 24 and 27 years old. They were not identified pending notification of family members.

      That's... a relief?

Sadly, there's no way to spin this as good, whether or not it's something that he potentially suffered from. He's gone and it's a terrible situation regardless, equally as much for the friends as it is for Jose himself. I don't know who the others are though, and AFAIK they haven't impacted my life nor will they for years to come.

J.F. was such a gem, as a kid, baseball player, community member (based on what I saw), and really was an icon for young Cuban players around that area really looked up to him. Just look at all of the players who said he was their favorite player in the lineup announcements.

        Re: Jose Fernandez R.I.P

I was stunned when I first saw the headline of the article of it on MLB Trade Rumors this morning. Can't believe he's gone. Definately a sad day for baseball. Would have liked to see what he could have accomplished during his career. A young man gone way too soon. I think Pirates manager Clint Hurdle put it perfectly. I'll quote what he said below. Saw it in an MLB.com article.

Here it is: "It's just sad. It's so horribly sad on so many different levels that there'll be no more of that emotion on the mound, that skill set, that human being, that young man with such a gift, such a great smile. I've been trying to live that life for a while now. I wasn't always in that place. It just makes all the more sense when things like this happen. Be where your feet are. Enjoy the moment. There'll be a day where there won't be another day."

One of my favorite non Yankee players. No words. First, Oscar, now this. I'm not even sure I want to watch baseball for awhile.

            Re: Jose Fernandez R.I.P

You know I'm not even sure this has hit me yet. It didn't hit me when I woke up, and it's just starting to dawn on me now.

I woke up, and saw on my news feed a Marlins pitcher was involved in a deadly accident. Mind you, I'm still half awake, eyes still blurry. And then it says Jose Fernandez, and it was just like what? Naw, this can't be real.

I'm just heartbroken, I never knew the dude, never talked to him. I can't even imagine how his family, friends, teammates, and the Marlins organization is feeling.

So it feels selfish that I feel like I was robbed of watching this guy play. It doesn't even matter now.

He was such an immensley talented, electric pitcher, that was just fun to watch. Just looked like he enjoyed playing the game, and loved everyone around him, and then he bounced back stronger then ever from TJS.

You know pitchers are made of glass these days, so who knows how long he would have been around for, but man, when he was on, it's hard to envision anyone better then him.

His last game was genuine "Kid K"

            8.0 IP, 12K's, 0 ER, and the W.

And we'll never see it again. Life is ****ed up.

Says a lot about Jose Fernandez as a person and his place in this game--in a game where no one is supposed to shed a tear, there was not a dry eye in the entire sport today.

                Re: Jose Fernandez R.I.P

This is so hard to deal with man, he was my favorite pitcher in the league and one of the best. Baseball is worse going forward for having lost this guy. People say "play the game the right way" as a means to stifle emotion and make the players as bored as office workers but Jose played the game the way I wanted to see it played, he made it look like a little league game all grown up.

It's so unbelievably sad that he's lost today, and that doesn't even begin to touch on the fact that a child will be born and never meet their father. This is just too difficult. I'm glad I had the opportunity to watch him be great and I wish his kid had been afforded the same or just the opportunity to see what we all saw in him. Can't even begin to describe how sorry I am for his girlfriend and family.

Its hard to accept that this is a reality. Gone far too soon.

                  RIP Jose Fernandez.

Must have been some impact with the jetty to kill them... I'm guessing broken necks or something like that?

Dolphins are retiring Fernandez's 16. Also I have a feeling that Fernandez will be a unanimous pick for the Cy Young. He put up great numbers this year and there is no real sure fire candidate either after Kershaw got hurt.
