By the time Buckner's play came around they had already blown a save twice, including a wild pitch that allowed the tying run to score in the bottom of the 10th after the Sox had taken a 5-3 lead.

The man has been hounded by the media since then and made the scapegoat for the fictional curse that everyone loved to talk about. True Red Sox fans never blamed him for the loss to begin with. It was just a convenient image for the media to use to symbolize the Red Sox woes.

EDIT - The Sox also left 14 men on base in this game.

Yeah, ask any Red Sox fan. Bob Stanley was the LaTroy Hawkins of his time.

How is it possible to be a Red Sox and Yanks fan? I could see the Jays and one of those two maybe but I mean a Red Sox/Yanks fan, thats just not possible.

                            I don't understand why it wouldn't be.

You like one team and you like the other. Not that difficult.

Some people who view the rivalry from afar are not really ensared by the entrenched mentality which exists between those in the same geographic proximity. For example, initially being a CUbs fan through watching WGN in, say, New Mexico, means that the Cubs-Cards rivalry is imperceptible to them. Its a little different in this case as the Yankees represent more things which people perceive as negative than is the case with the Cardinals but still...
