    Guzman Signs!

    News
Washington is making a splash in the free agent market. The team signed shortstop Cristian Guzman to a four-year $16.8 million contract on Tuesday. Guzman, who is a very good fielder, hit .274 with eight home runs and 46 RBI for the Twins last season. Minnesota declined his $5.25 million contract option in October.

It was once believed that Guzman would be a consistent threat to hit .300 and lead the league in triples, but he has regressed as a hitter since his All-Star season in 2001. He hit around .270 each of the last three years and has often been accused of not focusing on baseball since he signed a big contract following that All-Star year. Guzman will never be a power threat, but maybe playing for a new franchise will motivate him to utilize the speed he once used to get infield hits and stretch doubles into triples.

And now he is joined on the left side by Vinny Castilla.

            Um......

Where is DC getting this money? As far as I know there's no owner yet. Gee MLB throws out the money for the DC market but not for MTL

Really shows what they really had in mind when they said they'd try to keep the 'Spos in MTL.

MLB has raised the Expos payroll from $40.mil to $60.mil in order to allow them to field a decent team and to attract people to games.

What a dumb signing. They wasted their 2nd and 3rd round picks for players that wouldn't have been offered arbitration.

                        Re: Guzman Signs!

                        Both signings were terrible.

Sure Castilla put up good numbers last year but look at his numbers away from coors .... they're were brutal.

And then you give a 4 year deal for over 4 mil a season for Guzman (no power, doesn't draw walks, wiffs way too much = poor player).....

Besides the money they gave up 2 draft picks. They could have waited until Dec to sign these players without giving up any picks.

                        Their GM is a moron.
