Re: 2017 MLB Trade Deadline Thread

Yep, after Jose Fernandez's untimely demise last September, the Marlins couldn't really be seen as a serious contender no matter what they did/didn't do with Stanton. Also due to Stanton's history of injuries and freak accidents, there's no time like the present--this looks like the year he finally hits 40+ homers.

I would like to see him land on a contender, Dodgers or otherwise. I'm all about getting star players onto good teams and into the postseason. It's good for them, it's good for us to watch, and it's good for the sport.

Actually I thought it was the right time to move Maybin, but it was also the right time to move a lot of other pieces as well.

This is a deal you get at the last minute when it starts to look like you won't get anything, not a deal you make with 2 weeks left and plenty of time to negotiate. Not that I was expecting a haul for JD, but I figured it would be more than this

Sure, waiting and letting some contenders get anxious would be the best, but what if he gets injured in the next 2 weeks? What if the only team with serious interest pulls the trigger on another deal in the meantime? The bottom line is Martinez is gone after the year, so getting something is probably better than getting nothing.
The thing is, they could keep Martinez, offer him arbitration, and then when he signs elsewhere, they get a supplemental first round pick as compensation (they have to get under the luxury tax, but that's doable). This happened with the Padres and Justin Upton a few years back. Sure, the first round pick is a crap shoot too, but the extra pool that comes with the pick money allows more flexibility at the draft. So while the market may be depressed, Avila still has to weigh that pick vs a trade return.

That being said, I don't want to see a total Cubs/Astros/Padres tear down. When it works it is great, but when it doesn't, you get the 1996-2004 Detroit Tigers. My guess is Detroit is more likely to follow what the Reds are doing right now; bad, but not a total dumpster fire to watch.

Pablo Sandoval back to the Giants.

        Chris Carter back to Oakland.

Looks like the Braves are telling teams they plan on keeping Matt Adams.

Does this mean Freeman is going to play at 3B for however long Adams is in ATL?

I'd prefer the other 3B in SanFran, personally lol. Hell, I'd like Aaron Hill back.

I didn't have a problem with selling high on Maybin, but big Al got nothing for him, and it was supposed to be the first domino in a massive sell off. He ended up being the only guy moved.

Read they're also talking with Tigers about Verlander/Justin Wilson package.

Mariners have a pretty terrible farm system, so four prospects isn't really saying much. CF Brayan Hernandez is the primary piece in the deal going back to the Marlins. He's only 19 and has some promise, but obviously a ways to go.

Seems like a solid deal. The Mariners need the bullpen help and Phelps is under control for next year too.

Good point; I'm sure he did factor all of that in. I'm not saying I love what happened, I just think it will take some time before we know if it was a total surrender of a good player or not.

I know what you're saying, but there may be no other way. I think you can't half-commit to a rebuild. You either do it and hang on to your barf bag, or don't. In at least 2 of those 3 cases you cited, it turned out pretty well. No one longs for the dark days of over-paying for Bobby Higginson and Dean Palmer while hanging your hopes on the likes of Frank Catalanotto and Robert Fick to be able to hit enough dingers to lose 7-4 on a nightly basis, but if it's done intelligently with real commitment, it can be a productive destruction. But clearly, it's easier said than done, and when the team becomes irrelevant again for a while, it totally sucks...

Pretty much nailed it. Vis-à-vis the above comment, it was a 1/2 commitment. Not even. Like a 10% commitment to a rebuild. Either keep him and make a push for the stretch run, or trade him along with 5-6 other valuable assets. But all he did was positively guarantee a mediocre outcome without any serious future returns.
