    Re: 7/14 - 7/30 Game Discussion Thread

Time to throw the towel on the season for the Jays. Everything that went well for them over the last two years have gone horribly bad. The main cogs in the offense either got old at the same time or injured. (Travis and you can't tell me that Donaldson isn't playing through aches and pains) The pitching has been rocked with injury and really bad performances as well. It's time to make some trades and retool for 2019 instead from everything we've heard management still wants to make a run next year. Shapiro is badly misreading this market if he thinks the fans are so fickle that they won't understand that this team needs to tear it down a bit.

Oh well, least Vladdy and Bo will be in a Jays uniform in '19 or '20.

We knew Toronto's "window" was closing pretty fast with the veteran group they had, but they actually have the worst run differential in the American League (-90). Worse than the White Sox. Worse than the A's. The only teams in MLB worse by run differential are San Diego (-132), which is bad on purpose, and San Francisco (-114), which is also being ravaged by father time apparently.

Toronto has scored the fewest runs in the AL (401) and would rank ahead of only Philly, San Fran, and San Diego in the NL in that department.

They're also among the least athletic and slowest teams in all of baseball according to some metrics that came out a while ago. It's pretty much a team in need of an overhaul but ownership and management is going to cling onto the golden goose so to speak. The Jays have the highest attendance in MLB despite this bad season and while the TV numbers are a little soft they're still in the general ballpark of the last two years. Apparently 2015-16 are the only years that the Jays made money for Rogers.

It's way early and none of it matters yet, but Moncada hasn't had a lot of good swings yet. I know he swung and missed a lot in the minors, but he really has looked off balance a lot. Again, nothing to worry about as Judge looked awful last year and we see how that worked out, but Moncada isn't lighting up the league just yet.

He doesn't really look like a natural at 2B either. At least not on that last chance where he turned a routine grounder into a bobble/close play.

He didn't look comfortable at 3B when I saw him there either...I'm sure he's a great talent, but it seems every time I watch him he doesn't show it.

He's a great baseball guy. Knowing how bad this season's been for the Jays he should pick it up tonight.

Jays and A's come into the game with the exact same record, 44 - 54. I'd say the odds A's win tonight are 50/50.

I don't know that I've seen a 3B with an arm equal to Machado's. That DP he just turned/made look easy isn't even doable my every other 3B not named Arrenado.

In this way, it never looks like the pitcher has "missed" his target.

I agree, however, on his other defensive skills. Definitely below average, but I'll take his bat plus his pitch framing. It's been nice to have something at catcher after 3 years of Gattis/Betancourt/Pierzysnki.
IDK...the game I saw the other night with Teheran - he literally cost us the game as a simple throw from the pitcher he couldn't handle to tag the runner at home and end the inning. I see tons of things where he doesn't block the pitch (why does he attempt a backhand instead of blocking a pitch when a runner is on??) not to mention his paltry SB%.

I like his bat...just think his defense is below average. Fangraphs rates him with -7 DRS.
