In an odd twist, the Cubs and Indians are the only two division leaders that haven't reached 60 wins yet.

Cubs seem to be running into what the Brewers ran into about a week ago or so, playing against better teams right now.

Brew Crew is only 1/2 out now, but they need to hit like they did before the AS break because I doubt the pitching will hold up for any long periods of time.

Is he the kind of guy that can sustain that (can anyone?) and has he gotten lucky often this year? While he's been a lot better, I can't help but see him as this year's Trayce Thompson.

Cubs should be counting their blessings that they didn't have to see either Scherzer or Strasburg, but Milwaukee can still leapfrog them again this weekend as they're playing the Rays.

Would help if Lackey doesn't lose the game in the first inning today.

Moonshot by Harper. 1-0 Nats already.

Moral victory for Lackey I suppose, as that's the only run he gave up in the first.

Cubs immediately tie it with back to back doubles leading off the inning.

Jackson not fooling anyone as Avila goes yard for the first time as a Cub. 4-1.

I find it really hard to explain why a contender like Washington is rolling with Edwin Jackson in the starting rotation. Again, it's been 5 years or more since he was an MLB-caliber pitcher. Quite the fever dream by Mike Rizzo.

The Cubs just need to be leading by more runs than Daniel Murphy has at-bats remaining and things should go well.

Nobody can sustain a .414 BABIP (he's hitting .352 on ground balls!).

My inkling is Chris Taylor is following the trend of hitters trying to elevate the ball and hit homers, which is leading to a better batted-ball profile for him (.229 ISO vs career .156 ISO, Pull% 37.9% this year vs 28.3% last year). Sprinkle in a good situation, regular playing time, good coaching, and a good deal of luck and you've got career-year-in-a-can.

Any BABIP above ~.360 is not sustainable, but as Taylor's a speedy guy who basically hits everything straight and rarely hits pop-ups, he can definitely sustain a well-above-average BABIP. Taylor's not going to keep playing like this, but the overall package is good enough that he can settle into a nice ~+3 win player.

I don't understand the Trayce Thompson comparison either. Thompson's never had a season this good and his skill-set is very different from Taylor's.

Kind of encapsulates the Cubs' recent 3-game skid when Kris Bryant goes up 3-0 against Edwin Jackson with a man on 3rd base and still strikes out. Playing down to the competition, imo.

EDIT: Bryant is batting .147 in what FanGraphs considers to be "high leverage" situations this year (44 plate appearances). He's batting .241 in "medium leverage" (157 PA) and .317 in "low leverage" (244 PA) situations. Also, .218 w/RISP (95 PA). Much more skewed than in recent years for him. No wonder he only has 48 RBIs in 101+ games. Looking for him to make some adjustments or for a correction to take place.

Duensing has been an absolute rock this year. Most underrated signing of the offseason.
