Re: 2017-2018 MLB Hot Stove Thread

I'm with the players, do what ya gotta do. Get your money. Record revenues being set every year, teams getting 50 mil free from the sale of that arm of MLBAM...and people are siding with the owners?

We've got essentially a Josh Donaldson situation with Judge, he won't be unrestricted until he's 30. I hope if he has another year close to last year, they give him some kind of Trout/Tulo/Longo deal and lock him up, give him his money.

Boston, LA, NY can't afford to pay everyone. Boston has Betts, Boagaerts (however that's spelled), Benintendi, and more prospects. We've got Gary, Judge, Bird. LA has Kershaw opting out next season, and they're already trying to get their payroll down so they can pay down debt. These teams have their own players they have to worry about paying.

Yeah, but what incentive do owners have to spend money when they can chill back and make some nice profit without making a real effort with your payroll?

Apparently the World Series isn't enough. Some owners: "Meh, a WS would be nice but if we don't win it, is that the worst thing in the world?".

Are players going to strike so teams have to spend a certain percentage of "baseball related income" like they do on basketball? Again, what are the players exchanging for that? Are we heading towards a real unified baseball draft (one of the few arrows remaining on the MLBPA quiver)?

This sounds like a salary floor situation. And hell freezes over before owners accept that without a salary cap.

The first thing the MLBPA needs to do is fire Clark and get some real labor guys in there to see what's what before doing anything drastic. Take whatever years are left before the new CBA to scout the land and make your analysis and bargaining proposals and take it from there.

Whatever pressure Bryce Harper and Manny Machado felt individually to perform well so they could get a monstrous payday after this season has just been ratcheted up. Best case scenario for MLBPA Harper & Machado have career years and then all eyes are on teams to see what excuses (if any) they come up with to not pay those guys.

Regarding this winter, I think it is just a combination of a weak free agent class, with some out of step salary expectations + teams finally wising up about contracts for old guys. You can only do so many Albert Pujols type deals before you stop hitting your head against the wall.

Rangers and Bartolo Colon are close to a deal.

Getting close to Dotels record of 13. Rangers would make Colons 11th team.

Random trivia question for anyone here, name the 10 teams Colon has played for(without looking it up obviously)

I'm fairly certain you are correct...I actually was looking at something the other day and saw he was in Boston. I didn't remember that at all. I'm still not sure how he won the 2005 CY over Santana...

If I'm not mistaken that was the season he was traded twice in.

I have a vague recollection of all the teams mentioned that Colon played for except Boston. That one totally escapes my mind.

Ya, those are all 10 teams.

He won the Cy Young because he was the top pitcher on a playoff team and lead the league in wins. Not to mention it was their first season being billed as the "LA Angels". Santana was in Minnesota who were just over .500 and had fewer wins.

Just over a decade ago, but crazy how much peoples interpretation on stats has changed. So much emphasis always seems to be put on wins/team performance, when that obviously shouldn't determine a players individual performance.

It may have been 13 years ago, but I know plenty of people at the time who thought that was an awful award choice. Heck, Santana finished 3rd (Mo was 2nd). You say Santana had fewer wins like he had 10 less or something...he was 17-6 while Colon was 21-5, but Santana had better numbers/was the better pitcher in every way.

Not saying Colon was better, but 20 wins is the "magic number" for win totals. Colon with 21 had 3 more than the next closest guy in the league. So I'm sure that was a number people probably valued alot. Early 00s seems to have multiple examples of a guy winning Cy Young with a better W/L record despite having worse numbers in areas like WAR,K,BB,ERA,WHIP and other stats.

I don't like people using win totals to judge anyone(whether it be a SP in baseball, goalie in hockey or QB in football) because that makes it seem like it's all on that one guy. Individual W/L records should really only matter for individual sports like Tennis.

Heyman thinks Brewers have the top offer to Darvish, he's supposed to make a decision by Monday

We'll see if that actually happens.

I think the Darvish situation has become quite clear. He really, really wants to stick with the Dodgers, much like how a lot of Asian players prefer the West Coast for a number of reasons. The Dodgers have the luxury tax to worry about and view Darvish as a bit of a luxury to have, so it's become a weird love triangle with other teams wanting Darvish more than LAD, but with him holding out for LA. True that the time table for resolving this is anyone's best guess.
