I've heard stories like this off and on this past season as it pertains to Price. The guy is one of those people that let's EVERYTHING whether positive or negative affect him. There's probably a bit of low self esteem built into his character, not necessarily in how he lives his life but he needs to feel loved in order to be at his best. In short, he's a guy that can't thrive in a big market atmosphere or if he's there, than there has to be a love affair between him, the fans and the media. His Toronto experience could've been way different if it had gotten off to a bad start but everyone bought into him from the very beginning.
He's best in a middle or smaller market but that contract makes it unrealistic unless Boston wants to eat it. Another thing i've heard is that within the culture of the Boston clubhouse Price and recently departed John Farrell made it seem like the media was the enemy. Bob Ryan related a story of how he (or one of his colleagues. I can't remember for certain) was in the clubhouse one day and Benintendi was all "what's he doing in here? Get him out." Ryan was pretty much dismayed because Benintendi is said to be a smart and really nice kid. So the culture in the clubhouse was already pretty testy and tense.
I would not be surprised if the Sox do try to deal him but it's going to be tough IMO.
