Re: 2017-2018 MLB Hot Stove Thread
I remember them struggling with attendance before LeBron and Bosh got there. I guess they helped change the culture.
That's all I'll say. Im getting OT.

Re: 2017-2018 MLB Hot Stove Thread
Miami isn't the greatest market but their teams do have small dedicated fanbases outside of the Dolphins which will always be king in that city and even then, they have some down years as well.
The Marlins fanbase being jerked around goes further back than Loria though, just look at the Wayne Huizenga ownership where he spent big money a couple times to win championships (which resulted in fans coming to the stadium BTW) and then each time he'd hold a firesale. It's not like they've had a stable direction from ownership on down other than trying to maximize profits (Loria) or stroking ego. (Huizenga) I don't 100% feel sorry for the fanbase but I see where they're coming from.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: 2017-2018 MLB Hot Stove Thread
I feel no pity for Marlins fans. I get that Loria probably pissed off whatever Marlins fans that exist with his firesales. But they never supported that team any way.
Hell Miami fans barely support anything. They are as fair weather as it gets. Just ask the Miami Heat.
You have two world series championships in a short period of time. You had an enjoyable product on the field. You had Giancarlo which is worth the price of admission right there. And you still can't show up?
I've said this before. Tampa Bay and Miami DO NOT deserve to have teams.
Cry me a ****ing river Marlins man.

Re: 2017-2018 MLB Hot Stove Thread
I still don't get why all leagues want multiple Florida teams. How does that help? Would it hurt the market in any way if you had 1 team representing the entire state?

Then you add in the fact Tampa plays in that trash stadium. It wasn't very well planned.
I personally dont think it will matter if Tampa or St Pete gets a new luxurious stadium. The interest just isn't there. Quit fooling yourself MLB and move those two teams somewhere they can actually be appreciated.

Re: 2017-2018 MLB Hot Stove Thread
If I was a fan of a BUSINESS that didn't give a **** about its customers and made it clear that it wasn't going to do anything in their interest to the point where it brings me to tears, I wouldn't be a fan of them anymore.
Aside from being a Yankees fan, I'm a Knicks fan. I know **** management. The day I cry over something James Dolan does with his sports team, a billionaire who doesn't care if I live or die, will be the day I've lost my sanity.
I'm trying to imagine Spike Lee telling James Dolan, "Do you know who I am?" Even that sounds arrogant to me, and everyone actually knows Spike Lee. I can't imagine some random lawyer who sits in the front row trying to plead with the CEO of a company. It's insane.
If Loria takes over the Yankees and then drives them into the ground, you Yankees fans are all on suicide watch. Let's not kid ourselves here. Easy to throw stones at other fanbases when your situation is relatively secure.
And you can't be serious about Marlins Man! This dude is basically a charity. We don't know the context of "do you know who I am?" It could've been them passing a hot mic around in a Q/A session and simply introducing themselves.
The fact is the Marlins' new ownership is making its fanbase go through another fire sale/cash grab/tear down after they were hoping the team was being relinquished from all that perpetual B.S. It's a BUSINESS under new ownership. You can't really blame them for having raw feelings even if Jeter The Baseball Executive Mastermind actually even becomes a thing. By all accounts, he's very much learning on the job and all the headlines have been negative so far.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment

But I'll reiterate again. You have a brand new badass ballpark. A nice core of players. And the fans still don't show up.
Whether that fanbase has been burned or not. Does it really matter?

Then they lost 100 games the next year and drew 1.6 million fans.
They've had a losing record every single year since that park opened and all with the knowledge of how Jeffrey Loria does business. How can you get attached to a player and a team when you know it's only going to last for 2 or 3 years, maybe?
Ryne Sandberg is probably my favorite player of all time and as a Cubs fan I had that luxury to have franchise players around for a long time when I was growing up. You probably had Jeter depending on how old you are. That connection is important. They just gave away Giancarlo Stanton for free. Their hot shot pitcher died in a horrific boating accident. Their other players are actively asking to be traded. All the Marlins have ever known is this cycle of rinse and repeat.
They win and their attendance goes up. They lose and fire sale and it's like they're starting all over again. I think it matters a lot that they have been burned over and over again. Meet the new boss...same as the old boss. Huizinga, Loria, Sherman/Jeter...who cares? All seems the same to them.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment

Seems the Cardinals aren't going to move off of Josh Donaldson as they are apparently still inquiring. Really wish they would move on before they sacrifice too much to try and win now.
Todd Frazier has said that he is willing to move around the diamond to increase his market. He's played first base, and is willing to play the corner outfield spots.I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

If they were passing around a hot mic in a Q&A session why would he ask if they know who he was? Why would it matter? You can't be serious. This dude is basically a charity? How bout this: if Marlins Man gives a **** about baseball in Miami, don't support this ownership group until they show you results. All he's gotta give up is his camera facing seat.
Hope doesn't buy the team out of debt, so unless the Marlins fans can pool their hope together to buy a controlling stake in the team, they don't get a say. I can 100% blame them for expecting anything other than this. When someone takes over a failing business, this is generally the first step. If they do this again in 5 years, then Sherman, Jeter and Co. are full of ****. But until then, Marlins fans having unrealistic expectations for a franchise that regularly ranks in the bottom five in attendance doesn't change the fact that it's been 3 months and people are acting like this is their 3rd teardown since the new group took over.
That thing about them drawing 2.2 million fans when their stadium opened? They were 12 out of 16 in the NL. They've been 15 out of 15 every year since.Last edited by DieHardYankee26; 12-20-2017, 09:02 PM.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Dude did you not read I'm a Knicks fan? Do people think all Yankees fans are fans of the Steelers and Lakers or something? We already have a team that is a laughingstock, and widely known for it. We manage. We know what we signed up for.

2. Are you saying that the only way for Marlins fans to have a legitimate right to complain is if they are billionaires that can actually buy the team? If so, just wow.
3. It's been only 3 months, but the fans of the team have seen this movie far too many times. Slash payroll. Sell everything that isn't bolted down. A seemingly incompetent team of front office executives that really don't seem to care what their fans think. That see the business as a money machine no different from a casino or a burger joint or an insurance company. I think fans of pro sports teams want people that give a crap about their team and the customers of the team to be making these decisions.
4. When people pay north of a billion dollars for a pro sports team, they always have a fire sale? There are examples, sure, but this is hardly the only destiny for a new ownership group. You will probably find a lot of examples of teams going on spending sprees with new ownership. The fact they are subtracting from the team to pay down debt instead of adding to a good young core by adding free agents/international signings is their choice. Marlins fans have every right to be upset about that choice. I don't see how you can say it's not valid for them to feel that way...or buy the team already..or they're just a buncha whiny babies who need to RE2PECT.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment

In an attempt to get this back to the Hot Stove......
Brewers have signed Jhoulys Chacin to a 2 year $15MM deal.
Duquette has said that unless offers improve Thursday, the Orioles will pull Machado off the blockI can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

Hmmm, so Darvish meeting with Texas was just kind of...to hang out.
Cubs, Astros, Yankees have been linked as potential fits for him.
I wonder what the difference will end up being for Arrieta vs Darvish. Both are the same age and have about the same level of talent/bonafides. Does it come down to how much difference will Boras make?Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment
