Re: What all the hype for........
I disagree that teams are overpaying for pitchers. The bottom line is you need good starting pitching to be competetive. Just ask the Orioles. They went out and got Tejada and Javy Lopez but didn't have good enough pitching to compete.
Teams like the Red Sox and Marlins win because of quality starting as was shown in this years WS. The Red Sox only allowed 3 runs in the last 3 games of the WS against one of the most potent lineups in baseball.Comment

Re: What all the hype for........
Well for one, Pavano's rise started pretty much after his trip to Fenway in '03 when he got slapped around by the Red Sox. After that he pitched very well down the stretch for the Marlins and into the playoffs (where he was lights out) and that continued into '04. He may have pitched in a pitcher's park, but he led the NL in road wins so I think he is capable of pitching anywhere. And keep in mind, most teams are not courting Pavano with the intentions of him being the ace of their pitching staff.Comment

What does this have to so with what I said? Benson was overpaid plain and simple. His contract was used to measure the worth of Jaret Wright, Leiber, Milton, Pavano, etc. Now every pitcher better than Benson (there are alot of them) will say "hey, I'm better than Benson and he makes 7 mil+ per year." It is a domino effect. No way in hell Wright and Leiber knock down 7 mil+ per year contracts if the Mets don't initially sign Benson to that rediculous deal.
This argument has zero to do with high market v. low market teams. I will add that while the Yanks can outspend everyone, there are alot of owners (Twins anyone?) who have a ton of cash, but are just to darn stingy to put it back into their teams.Comment
