The point is I think Epstein might be trying to force Steinbrenner's hand and make him over-pay for Randy Johnson in retaliation. This is excellent psychological warfare in my opinion.
I think that's exactly what it is. If Steinbrenner thinks that Wells is going o go to the Sox for 1 year then George will jump in and offer 2 years just to make sure he doesn't go to Boston. Epstein may be playing some serious mind games here.

FYI: Wells has a 5.00+ ERA in Fenway so expect a lot of high scoring games when he's pitching there.
Actually, his career ERA is 4.87at Fenway. Over the last three years however, he has pitched 37 innings and compiled an ERA of just 2.19. Whatever adjustments he made worked for him as he pitched very well against the Sox in his second go around with New York.

I'm just wondering what this all means for the rest of the free agent picture. ESPN right now is reporting that the deal is "Essentially done" and that by signing Wells the Red Sox are creating some "wiggle room" to pursue Edgar Renteria. What happened to a one year player at short and then turning the keys over to Hanley Ramirez? If the Sox sign Wells, it means that they either are not going to sign Pedro or Pavano. And to be honest, I'm not sure which one they would target. I'm guessing Pedro and that they going after Wells might mean the Sox are convinced Pavano either isn't worth the money (all along, they reportedly wanted Radke over Pavano) or they're all but certain he's going to sign with New York.

EDIT: The Boston Globe is now reporting the signing is complete. Two years for a guaranteed 8 million that could be raised as high as 18 million with performance incentives.
