"sigh" The way this Jays season is going i'm just hoping for the sell off and get Vladdy up here ASAP.

Sucks for Bautista to get cut by the Braves too but hey, least it was a slightly better way to go out than being a complete sinkhole in Toronto.

Incredible that the Braves rally to win in that fashion on the anniversary of the Brooks Conrad game. Love the vibe this team has going...amazing.

Had to check to be sure: not a single individual associated with that roster is still on the team today. Not like that is completely unexpected, though. Eight years is quite a bit of time for a turnaround of players.

Hardly any other personnel either. Different manager and GM (Snitker was still around though), different stadium... heck, the team even technically has different colors lol.

I wonder how many of them are even aware of that moment in history. They'd be like: "Wut?"

Ya, Snitker was the 3rd base coach for the Cincinnati game...but outside of that I don't think anyone else is still around.

On a personal note, I remember watching the Cincinnati game and as Conrad's ball cleared the fence jumping to my feet and yelling "Holy crap!"...not realizing my five year old son was standing next to me/watching and then he started putting his hands up yelling "Holy crap...Holy crap" as my wife came in to give me the death stare. Today, my now 13 year old son watched this with me and was doing his own "holy crap" yelling without having to imitate me...lol.

LOL that's great. Good to see the fandom experience transcending generations. Yeah, at the time in 2010 I was chastising Snitker for his third base coach antics of yore, and he has come a long way since then I guess.

On another note related to fandom, imagine if you're one of the fans who left and went home telling everyone that they lost, only to catch SportsCenter and find out otherwise (heh, like SportsCenter would show baseball highlights... that's another joke for another thread). It kind of irks me seeing fans leave games early. I understand if you have some other commitments and such, but if lacking in loyalty or faith is a question, I couldn't be more ecstatic to see you miss out on an awesome moment and not be a part of the celebrating crew.

I forget which game it was... I want to say a Warriors game... but the Dubs were being blown out once and fans were leaving, and they mounted an incredible comeback and you saw a shot of fans trying to sprint back into the arena and regain access, I believe only to be denied. Sucks to be you, I say! Couldn't be happier that they were denied lol.

Probably the ultimate baseball moment like the one you mention was the 1988 World Series. If you watch that Gibson highlight, you can see in the background ALL of the Dodger fans who left the game early on the freeway and the moment he homers you see all of the brake lights come on as they come to a stop on the freeway, probably all wishing they had been in Dodger Stadium watching instead of on the freeway listening to Vin call it.

Romo is starting today's game too.

Any explanation for the Sergio Romo strategy? I haven't really thought about it, but I'm not sure what Tampa is trying to gain from it.

From what I heard about it, Romo has been really good against righties this year, and the Angels hit 4 righties to start the game. So instead of using a LHP to start they game, they used Romo against that righty dominant top of the order to try to get once through that part of the lineup.

                      Something like that.

I surmised a few strategical advantages, but nothing officially mentioned from TB themselves.

It looks like they didn't have a starter enter at all today.

I think the Rays been doing this all season: 4-man rotation, go all-bullpen in the 5 slot when they don't have a convenient offday.

Must be kind of fun to tinker like this when you have no budget or fans and nobody cares what you do.

I know they've been doing what they did today, but Mabster said yesterday they started with a reliever for one inning only to put in the starter afterward.

Haha hey, that's how you can figure out some things.

I once called into the Giants local radio station and suggested something very similar (four-man rotation with an off-day, and a long-reliever or scrub starter on that fifth day with no off-day), and was shot down. Ah well.

Someday I want to test my "on paper" theory of what it would be like to start the year with your #4 and #5 starters instead of your #1, #2 and #3. I know this doesn't work perfectly for way too many reasons, but it would take some exhaustive testing and if a team actually implemented it and was successful, it won't keep working if every team went and did it.

So, then, looking at this rationally they're valuing getting those righties out in the first inning moreso than maybe the 6th or 7th inning when Romo would come on to face them normally. Whether it's Romo then a "starter" or a "starter" then Romo, they're presumably facing those batters the same number of times? Maybe they believe that giving the starting pitcher a "cleaner" start with less platoon disadvantages early will allow the pitcher settle into a rhythm and have a better/longer "start"?

That's how I see it (at least it was one of my suggestions). This way they also control when to do it instead of forcing out their starter later, and as you said the starter gets to get into a groove.
