I think this is a done deal for sure. The Cardinals will not overpay to keep him. There's no point in keeping him when they can get someone like Polanco for a cheaper price. Why not just let him go and bring up Bo Hart & Hector Luna to play the middle infield and spend that 8 million on a #2-3 starter?

Originally posted by SportsmanTOIt would be pretty ironic if the Sox and Cards end up swapping Shortstops. I think Cabrera has more of an upside but he's definately a National League type of guy so it makes sense for him to go back to the NL. Renterria will be a darling in Boston due to his great defense tho he'll have to put up some decent numbers at the plate.
The guy will probably bat .300, hit 10-15 HRs, score 90 runs, and drive in 80 RBIs, while stealing about 20 bases.
I'd say a little more than decent.Comment

Re: Renteria to Red Sox?
According to Bostondirtdogs.com, Theo has refuted the signing (or near signing) of Renteria. And Gammons is saying the Sox don't have enough money for Pedro and Renteria.
These media types with their "all but signed," "is going to sign with in X amount of hours" crap is starting to irritate me. They need to shut up and just say who's talking to who and who's serious about who. Stop telling us something is a done deal when it's not.Comment

Re: Renteria to Red Sox?
I just think this could be a done deal because Jockety and LaRussa are growing tired of the negotiations with him. Apparently with the Cardinals & Renteria there's an 8 million difference as Renteria is wanting 10 million a year over 4 years and the club is wanting to pay him around 8 million or so a year. The latest on Jockety & LaRussa is their "Pessimistic" rather than optimistic.
Personally I think Renteria is not worth keeping. It would be alot better spending that money on another starter or signing Polanco. He could probabily be signed for around 4-6 million.Comment

Re: Renteria to Red Sox?
From the Boston Globe:
Just how close are the Red Sox to acquiring Renteria? All indications Saturday were that a deal was all but done, but Sunday morning ESPN's Tim Kurkjian said he thought the Cardinals would step up to keep Renteria, and that five teams in total will still pursuing the All-Star shortstop. The Boston Globe reported Sunday morning that a surprising contender, the Tigers, remained in the hunt as well. In case the Renteria talks collapsed, the Globe reported, the Sox were exploring other options, including talking to the Mets about acquiring shortstop Kaz Matsui, possibly for first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz. Even Theo Epstein played down the Renteria reports: "That deal is not done," he said. "Edgar's one of a number of shortstops that remain on our list." ... Sources told the Globe on Saturday that the Sox and Renteria were close to a four-year deal in the $40 million range.Comment

I agree though...enough of the "done deal" talks with every newspaper trying to break a signing that isn't inked. Stop messing with my emotions!Comment
