    Arthur Rhodes for Matt Lawton

Looks like Arthur Rhodes was traded again. The Pirates just traded him to the Cleveland Indians for Matt Lawton. It also looks like there is cash going both ways in the deal.

Good deal for both teams. Both teams fill a need.

The Indians needed to move Lawton with the crowded outfield they have with Crisp, Sizemore, Gerut (who hopefully only experienced the usually sophmore slump), Ryan Ludwick and Franklin Gutierrez. Definitely a good move by both teams.

I like this move as a Pirates fan. They really had no need for Rhodes.

With the trade of Kendall it left a void in the leadoff spot. Lawton should fill that nicely. He'll also provide some pop and a little speed at the top of the order. If he can stay injury free, he should put up some good numbers.

I just wonder where he'll play? I'm guessing CF even though he played most of his games in LF for CL last year.

I think there are two options

1.) Lawton and Bay at the two corner spots with Tike in center and Craig Wilson at first

2.) Lawton or Bay in center with the other being in left, Craig Wilson in right and a free agent/other at first.

If I had to make a guess now it would number 2 with Bay in center and Lawton in left. The Pirates have some flexibilty so there are a couple ways it could shake out.

Karlos - Do you think Bay can handle CF? I'm not sure he can. He wasn't terrible in LF last year, but he wasn't real smooth either. I just don't think he's good enough defensively to play CF.

I guess we'll find out soon enough. C. Wilson is the other piece to the puzzle and we don't know if he's going to be traded or not yet.

It might not be the best fit for Bay but I think he's capable of doing it. He had a couple times in left last year where it was ugly but he has shown he has great speed in the outfield and can cover a lot of ground quickly. He may never become a Torri Hunter but I think he could an adequate CF.

If the OF becomes Bay/Lawton/Wilson that leaves a nice hole at 1st. I can't think of any free agents that would fit the Pirates nicely. You would either have to resign D. Ward and have him there, or move Ty Wigginton to first, have Castillo at 3rd and Freddy Sanchez at 2nd. Or we could just solve all these problems and trade for a nice 1st basemen.

But your right a lot of how the Pirates are going to look next year is going to depend on what happens with Craig Wilson.
