Re: Who would be better to have Jones or Beltran?

Jones at age 27 is already on the decline.

His defence is nowhere near what it was 2 seasons ago.

Jones's ISO Power has also dipped 3 seasons in a row.

His stolen base success rate is getting worse each year and last season he only had a 50% success rate. He K'd 22 more times last season than before in 25 less AB's.

Personally I feel like Beltran is over-rated and it's interesting to note Jones had more win shares (19) than Beltran last season (18).

I would rather take Beltran over Jones but if I'm a GM and I'm trying to get an OF, I feel like JD Drew is better value than both of those players because he wouldn't command as much.

Drew last season had a higher ISO Power, BA, OBP, SLG, and OPS than Beltran. Drew also killed Beltran in terms of win shares with 34 compared to 18 for Beltran.

Only problem with J.D. is you never know when he's going to be back on the DL again...

I agree, but I also think there's a lot left to come out of Carlos.

Re: Who would be better to have Jones or Beltran?

Beltran has shown improvement, I think thats the strongest thing he has going for him. He could conceivable be a 40 homer guy depending on where he plays but he does need to bring his average up if he's going to be a middle of the order hitter. His defense is pretty good, but he does commit more errors than you would expect out of a centerfielder and he needs to fix that part of his game. Obviously, the stolen base is a big part of his game and I was surprised ESPN wasn't making a big deal out of his bid to become a 40-40 guy last year like they did with Soriano a few years ago (must be the NY spotlight). He's not a 20 million guy, not even close, and he certainly isn't even a 17 million dollar a year guy. I also don't envision him as a number 4 or 5 hitter in an ideal lineup but he might have to be with the type of money he could command (if he's expected to be a big RBI guy). I'd say the 2 spot is the perfect spot for him because he can run and generally will have some guys on base, the 3 spot could work as well, but it all depends on what the rest of the lineup looks like.

Jones on the other hand is still a gifted play, but unlike Beltran he has shown little improvement over the years and has actually declined in many ways. I think he may be a perfect example of a guy who needs a change of scenery. When he's right, Jones is very comparable to Beltran and if he ends up being significantly cheaper than him I'd say there isn't much difference at all in terms of value between the two.

When I first saw the post I thought we were talking about Jaque Jones of the Twins. I would take him over the other two. He is still a left handed bat who can hit for both power and a decent average and costs less than both of them.

Andruw Jones' defense has declined, and his offense has regressed (career high K's in '04). Both his knees are creaky and he's about 30 pounds heavier (fatter) than a few years ago, which has resulted in a significant loss of speed.

                            I'll take Beltran.

beltran is younger, hits more home runs and steals more bases but jones is the best defensive CF in baseball...its a tough call...but id take beltran
