Re: Red Sox Turn there attention to Matt Clement

It would be nice to see the Sox sign a pitcher who is closer to 30 than to 40 before Spring Training.
Boston Red Sox 2004, 2007 World Series Champions

Nomar's homer off Pedro. Those four words just shouldn't go together. Not even on a day like 6/6/6. ~Bill Simmons

He has more potential than Clement (and Arroyo for that matter) but would probably cost more, not only to resign, but in that the Sox would have to give up some good prospects for him. With Hudson off of the market (even though the Sox had virtually no chance of landing him) I'd like to see them hang onto Hanley Ramirez and see if he can move second or centerfield. Damon's heading into the last season of his contract and we don't know what to expect out of Mark Bellhorn.
Hanley could still land a guy like Ben Sheets, even though their system is loaded. I wouldn't waste him on AJ either.

Sheets is definitly very tempting. With an ERA less than 3 and WHIP less than 1 that puts him well ahead of AJ. I kind of want to see what he can do in the first half of the season (and really, thats what Milwaukee should do to potentially increase his value at the deadline) but if the Sox could trade for him now I think they would be tempted to part with Hanley for him. Really, Milwaukee has done nothing but aquire prospects for good players for a couple of years now and should just pay Sheets and build around him, but if they're going to trade him I'd like to see Boston in on him.

And I'm with you UMass, I'd really like to see the Sox get younger in the starting rotation. Thats why losing out on Pedro isn't the worst thing, but they did go out and sign Wells. I think Wells is a good signing, but only if they pair him with a young guy, and Clement really isn't that guy (he's 30 and will turn 31 in August).

I guess its gonna be offical. What a country, a losing record gets you 8 million a year. He is gonna get a 3 yr 25 milklion dollar deal.

No way the Brewers trade Sheets for a prospect. They've waited too long for him to become good and their not going to give up on him while he's still young and cheap. Maybe they'll trade him when he gets closer to free agency but not now for a young prospect.

The official website of the Boston Red Sox with the most up-to-date information on news, tickets, schedule, stadium, roster, rumors, scores, and stats.

Three years and 25 million does seem pretty high, but if Pavano can get 10 a year then I guess it makes Clement worth 8.3, roughly. Stupid Mets and their Benson contract...

Clement isn't a Pedro Martinez, but considering the numbers put up by Pedro and Lowe last year, Wells and Clement could conceivably be an improvement in the rotation. However, Clement is coming from a career spent in the NL and Wells is 42 so who knows? Hopefully Clement can finally harness his stuff in a Red Sox uniform. If they sign Varitek, he should be able to help Matt out a lot. I'm also hoping the Red Sox will have the payroll flexibility to make a run at Sheets come July, should he become available.

I agree Benson and the Mets ruined everything. I like Clement, but he just is missing something which I think is toughness. With that offense he could have a fine record. A good signing and a bit high but since they lost Pedro it isnt that bad to spend the money.
