Yeah his range at SS does worry me, it helps some having Rolen play next to him because Rolen fields some balls that most 3B wouldn't have a shot at so that will help him out a little if he sticks at SS. I haven't seen how he throws a whole lot, only have watched Anaheim play a little since their WS run back in 02, but once I start seeing him more that would erase my doubts more likely about his throwing.

If the Cards could add Lugo to play at SS I think that would be the best fit, he has a strong arm, above league average for range at SS, and would be the person who could come closest to matching Renteria's offense.

Lugo has a high error total for his career but one thing I've noticed is that Edgar Renteria had some bad error totals (26,27,24) in his first 3 years in STL, then his next (and final 3) years in STL he had totals (19,14,11) that progressively got better each year.

The 3 years his error totals started to decline were the 3 seasons he played with Scott Rolen by his side, I think the Rolen factor could help Lugo turn the corner defensively this season.

Edgar also use to have a poor work ethic before he went to STL. Julio Lugo couldn't hold eckstein's jock. Eckstein is a better fielder then Lugo and has a better bat with average.

The only thing Lugo has over Eck is the fact that Lugo hits homeruns and drives in runs but, he is a casualty in the infield boy has 87 Errors at short in 4 years from 2001-2004 when he played. That means in a season he averages about 21 errors.

      Advantage Eckstein

Pickup advantage for Cards over Lugo.

Renteria did have a bad work ethic, but even in that first half year with Rolen before the Cards acquired him he was struggling in the field. Rolens range will help out whoever the Cards put at SS, be it Lugo, Eckstein, or Cora, plus the guys on the Cards who have good work ethics (Rolen, Eckstein, etc.) will rub off on the other guys. I'm fine with Eckstein at SS, would be fine with Cora or Lugo at SS, I'd be fine with Cora at 2B also though.

I'm glad to have Eckstein wearing the Birds on the Bat, his style of play will make him become a fan favorite from day 1.

Eckstein at SS and Cora at 2B would be a good defensive MIF to run out there and have behind our mainly groundball pitching staff.
