Yeah it's ****ing dumb. Yeah start your season with games that matter halfway around the world so that fans of those teams would have to be up from 2:35am just to watch Opening Day. What a scam.

As a fan of one of those teams, I'll take the trade off. I'm watching a game that matters a week before other teams get to see regular season action.

I wish they did it at 11pm. That would make it 3pm in Tokyo. If they want the special event they should be the ones making the sacrifice.

I know the games count, but it just doesn’t feel like they should...I still view next Thursday as “Opening Day”.

How is that a scam? A lot of Opening Day games happen at 1pm when people are at work anyway. Just DVR it and watch when you get up and are getting ready for work or when you get home.

I mean I’m not a fan of the Japan series at all. I get what they do it. And at least West Coast teams it’s a much shorter trip than when East Coast teams go. But I don’t see how it’s a scam.

Seattle with the win on "opening day." Seemed like it was a pretty entertaining game. I might pull the trigger and wake up early to watch tomorrow morning....a nice pregame for the basketball games

I watched most of it cause I get up at 6 with my son anyway. It was a really fun game. The Japanese crowd is a lot of fun.

And here we are discussing the merit of these games in the spring training thread still. How is baseball society supposed to evolve as a whole if these games can't even get their own regular season thread on OS?

I'm going to do my best to watch tonight's/early morning's game to see Kukuchi (sp) pitch for the M's. Of course it's not being aired here in Canada so I have to use OTHER means "sigh"

Crowd was fantastic in the Tokyo Dome (watching on TV). Love to see other countries really get into America's Past Time. They definitely love their baseball in Japan.

                          That's a hard sell.

Corey Seager looks like he hasn't missed a beat.

This is kind of an ethnocentric view there. I know you don't mean it the way it came out but baseball is just as much the National Pastime in Japan as it is in the US. Yes, the game was basically introduced by the MLB barnstorming tours in the '20s and '30s but the Japanese version of the game is very unique and special.

Just saying without any malice or anything.

Like I said, most people are at work for Opening Day games anyway. Plus its not every year. I didn’t mind when the Yankees opened in Japan 14 years ago. Felt fun and special to get up early for those games. Granted it’s beyond dumb to open your season and then have to wait a week for more games to count but you couldn’t really do it another way.
