Want to know what bad pitching looks like? The Cubs are scoring 7.67 runs per game and are 1-5. The Cubs entered play tonight leading MLB with a .307 team batting average...and are now 1-5.

Suppose I should update this to 1-6 actually.

Michael Nelson Trout with the go-ahead homer.

Hopefully he's starting to heat up. Hopefully the team can, too.

Id like to @ all the cubs fans hating on Epstein and co right now. You guys got your wish in 2016 and now this is the side effect.

Actually why I love being a fan of a small market team rather than a big market team. No Milwaukee doesnt have much money in the first place, but we also dont just hand out ****ty contracts like the Heyward contract and corner ourselves financially. Have to remember Bryant only makes $12m, Rizzo makes $11m (although he makes $14.5 the next two years after so he doesnt really count), and Baez only $5m, while all 3 are worth at least $20m. And then there's Schwarb, Contreras, and Hendricks on arb contracts too. Great teams dont last forever.

I don't really understand this. You're saying in order for the Cubs to win the WS back in 2016, they were going to have to become this today?

It's just a natural side effect of a talented team that goes the distance. You trade away prospects for big pieces (getting Chapman for Torres, for example), you get the worst draft picks, your players that got you there become less affordable because of their on-field productivity (plus if you keep them they get older or can't ever meet the bar they did)... all teams should theoretically go through this. The Giants sure are.

That's why there are barely any legacy organizations in any sports.

I mean, I'd be furious if I was a Cubs fan. All that losing, all that losing on purpose, finally getting all those young star players, only for one World Series (albeit, of course....the ****ing Cubs winning the World Series) and then poof----time to rebuild again?

I don't think it's that dire for them yet, anyway. But if they end up having to pull some Royals-type crap....that's straight garbage. I've always had my concerns about Maddon though. Guy is somewhat of a gimmick with his "holistic", "new age" approach. I hope this isn't what's rearing its head. Front office hasn't done any favors by not addressing obvious weaknesses either.

In other news, Trout hit another HR to right-center and provided insurance to secure the win tonight. Something else. I really hope the team can tread water without Upton and Ohtani in the lineup. Simmons was hurt and out today too. I mean the team is running out Peter Bourjos, David Fletcher, Brian Goodwin and Tommy La Stella in their lineup. Good grief. Enough with the injury plague.

My God if the Mariners end up missing the playoffs because of something stupid like defense and bullpen issues, that would be depressing. However, I doubt we are even in it by July anyway...

Besides a RP named Chase Anderson, I would put yesterdays Brewers pen equivalent to the Cubs pen.

The only positive is they have Hateraide for the next 2 games if needed.

                      Maddon is the problem.

KB gives me the impression that he's soft and lacks fire. Given his background, it's fitting.

The FO screwed the club by getting cute. Eloy for Q was ridiculous. Darvish made no sense at all, and it looked like the club was bidding against itself.

Maddons lineup shenanigans going into 2017 set the team back 20+ games that year.

The KB thing is interesting. There was an article on the athletic about how he was playing with a chip on his shoulder this year and wanted to show more aggression to go against this belief that he's too nice. I haven't really seen it yet, but I haven't watched a ton.

The Cubs have looked bad so far...yes, but so have the Red Sox. Both of these teams are too talented (combined for 203 regular season wins last year) to play this way all year.

Let's not forget we play 162 games...if the Cubs had a 1-6 stretch in July, no one would really bat an eye. I fully expect the Cubs will be in the running (as will the Red Sox).

"What we're going through right now would have happened at some point during the season," manager Joe Maddon said. "When it happens during the year, then it's disguised more readily by your record. When you don't have a record, it stands out like a neon, flashing sign."
I hate it that I knew Joe Maddon would go to this excuse. It's not about winning some damn ballgames and what it would take to do so for this team. It's not a thorough analysis of what's gone wrong and how to fix it. It's just a sorry that you guys noticed we may not be all that good of a team.
