Crazy that the Indians bullpen outBraved the Braves, but I'll take it. Unfortunately a game like that can cover up the fact there are still a lot of issues with the pitching (and it would be nice if Ender would start hitting sometime soon).

The record for home runs before May 1st is 14 (ARod 2007 and Pujols 2006).

Yelich has 13 through April 20th, with 9 days to go.

Ah...but context is needed (as always). MLB started as early as it ever has this year (March 28th). When ARod hit his 14 in 2007, he did so in 23 games and 106 PA's. Pujols did his in 25 games with 110 PA's. Yelich is at 22 games/99 PA's. IOW, he isn't on a pace that completely obliterates their record...he's pretty much on the same pace.

Uh...ok. He's still going to own the record for home runs before May 1st. I don't know why everything in baseball needs an asterisk.

Anyways, here's Christian Vazquez throwing out Tommy Pham to end the game last night. Funny enough, it starts at 4:20 in the video.

It’s not an asterisk, but puts his achievement in context. Why would you NOT want that? Let’s say he finishes April with 20 home runs...to know he did that in 10 extra games definitely matters, IMO.

If you want to add context to it, take away the four from March. That would still be 16 (if he hits 20 in April). Then take into account that he didn't hit a home run for the first 6 days of April. Then he didn't hit another home run for a whole week after that. So (again taking away March) he has 9 home runs in 6 games (April 7, April 15 x3, April 16, April 18, April 19, April 20 x2).

Right, which is also lacking in those silly "teams have X more homers than last year at this date" stats. Like, in light that the season started earlier, wouldn't the right context be the numbers of games played. But I digress.

I'd say mentioning the amount of games played is pretty good context to have. It reminds me of the NHL recently.

Well, yea, we just added an extra team that brought in 41 more games to the season than have ever been played before. When Seattle joins the record will probably be broken again.

Knowing NHL logic, they're probably like "what scoring problem? We have more goals league wide than we did at any point, including the 80s! Nothing needs to be changed."

I always find the date stats to be misleading for that reason as well. Saying "player x has more __ than anyone by this date". That might be true, but if you played 5 games more than the record holder, you have better chance of breaking the number.

                            Damn it Strop.

1 run lead never felt good in this one. Cubs bats' notwithstanding, Chatwood deserved to win this one.

Chatwood gets the ND, but the Cubs get the walkoff win. Baez goes to 3rd on a misplayed ball down the RF line, scores on a Bote single.
