Fenway was never his problem since hitters rarely put the ball in the air against him. Walks are Lowe's number one enemy, that and bad defense. The defense was an excuse for him for the better part of the first half, but when the defense for the Sox improved Lowe still sucked. If he didn't have the 20 win sub 1.00 WHIP season in '02 and that great postseason performance the guy is making 2-3 million a year. I don't know how good the Dodgers will be in the field and Dodger stadium isn't going to improve his numbers vastly because he is a groundball pitcher. Taking away the number 9 hitter will help him and the fact that few guys will have seen him will probably lead to a solid 2005. Come 2006 he will look like the Derek Lowe of 2003-2004.

Re: Lowe signs with Dodgers
This is a great signing for the Dodgers. Pitching is what killed them last year and they now have a sinkerball pitcher to pitch in front of one of the best defenseive infields in the league (althought Beltre is gone... Cora and Isturis were still one of the best DP combos last year)

Re: Lowe signs with Dodgers
Originally posted by DuffysCliffLowe should be very good in LA where its a very pitcher friendly park, so those sinkers he leaves up in the zone won't be hit out, and also because theres not a lot of media/fan driven pressure. I'm happy for him, plus, the Red Sox now have 5 out of the first 50 picks, so I'm even happier.Comment

Re: Lowe signs with Dodgers
I'm curious to see if Lowe tries to pitch how he pitched in the playoffs, by using lots of change-ups and breaking balls. Obviously it worked for him but I don't know if it would work over the course of a regular season. His change-up is one of the worst I've seen a starting pitcher throw (83-84 mph compared with his 87-89 fastball). I haven't even seen him throw a cutter since 2002 but his breaking ball was always pretty good, just Varitek would rarely call for it.Comment
