I'm not really concerned about the Phillies. Sure, they have some talent. And if they performed up to their potential, they could contend. But I gotta see it before I believe it.

And the Marlins.... solid, but once again I don't see them challenging for anything more than a Wild Card.
You're still the favorites- I made the mistake of doubting the Braves last year. They will be the favorites until proven otherwise

There's nothing like a Braves-Mets game at Shea in September with the division on the line though. I just hope those days are back- those were the games I grew up on.

The Mets are the New York Rangers of the Major Leagues. They can buy high priced superstars but they can't put it together. But hey, at least you guys try...the Cubs like to sit on their rears.

Re: The Mets: How Good Will This Team Be?

I think it all comes down to health, and I'm not just talking about their elderly starting rotation. Reyes is as injury prone as they come apparently, and with Floyd, and Matsui things can get ugly. The second half of last year, it seemed like half their team was on the DL.

Anyway, as far as Beltran goes, he better hit above .270 are the phones are gonna be ringing off the hook at Mike & The Maddog day in and day out. He's gotta step his game up. But anyway, I love the move. I mean, THE METS of all teams got the #1 free agent out there. If you've lived in the Tri-State area and follow the Mets you know how that is almost laughable with their recent front office and awful FA pick ups.

I really like the Pedro move because the Boston media basically created a myth that Pedro is past his prime. He's got AT LEAST two Cy Young-calibre seasons left in him, especially in the NL.

I think David Wright will have a break out year, I saw him play a couple games last year and he dropped a bomb in one, and overall looks impressive.

Matsui should move to 2B (I dunno if they made this move official or not yet) and hopefully he won't be as atrocious on defense there.

Their OF, if Floyd stays healthy, can be one of the better in the NL, especially defensivly w. Cameron in RF.

They also need to pick up a first basement, and Delgado will be great if they don't overpay for him, but an average 1B will do to fill in.

Only glaring problem I see is what others have mentioned, their bullpen.

Bottom line, I see the following things determing their success this year:

            - Overall club's ability to stay healthy
            - Beltran living up to his bill, and surpassing it
            - Bullpen being reliable.

As of now, this team better make the playoffs.

I think their gonna play sleeper. Even though they signed some big names so far, everyone is still expecting them to lose. This team doesn't look half that bad.

Until the Mets show that they can play as a team they will lose. Their bullpen is not good enough right now to make a serious run at anything. Starters only go 100 pitches now and Pedro is done after six almost every outing. It seems like whenever they overpay for guys they get burned. The overpaid for Martinez and Beltran. But hey that is what the market was calling for.

Why is everyone so hard on Piazza?

He's still better than most catchers in baseball.

Only Pudge can see him at the plate. The Big thing for Piazza is health. If 100%, he is .300 30HR 100Rbi. The Mets biggest problem, and has been for the past few years, is health. This rotation is the best in years. Sure, they should have kept Kazmir and shipped him out for Hudson, but we cant dwell on that now. Omar Minaya stepped in and said he had full autonomy from the wilpon's. He has proven it getting the best hitter/pitcher on the market. If the Mets overpaid, it was about 1-2 million for each of the two. Plus Piazza's 16 mil. comes off the books next year. This team can be the best in the NL East. The braves offense is a question mark. Sure they got Hudson, but what is behind him in the rotation. Plus, you take Smoltz out of the pen for the first time in years. Kolb has been a good closer, but is no Smoltzy in there. You can't sleep on the Marlins, though. That rotation is still good and young. I dont think the Mets will get Delgado. I think they will get a cheaper 1B (Olerud/Lee/Doug M) and wait to workout Magglio Ordonez in two weeks. If he is healthy, they will make a move on to sign him and trade Floyd for some help in the Pen. I am very excited about the upcoming season!!!

They need to get a 1b. I would love if they sign Olerud to stabilize the infield. They need bullpen help, I think we are good in the closer role. Looper was solid last year. They need to address the Floyd situation.

If Omar can work on those 3 things, I don't see why the Mets couldn't battle the Braves for the East title or atleast the wild card.
